I would hate giving up a 2nd round pick for a 38 year Mark Giordano. How did the Flames do last season with a 37 year old Mark Giordano? How are the Kraken doing this season with a 38 year old Mark Giordano? I'm not saying that he's conducive to losing but it's clear he's not conducive to winning at this stage of his career. This team isn't in position to give up 2nd round picks for defensive depth when by far the largest issue on the team is depth scoring amongst the forward group.

This org loves re-treads. With mixed results. Hope it doesn't happen.

There's no doubt in my mind it's a possibility because it's a classic Brad Treliving move. Doesn't mean it's the right move.

Keep the draft picks and keep building through the draft. The organization has too many question marks moving forward and it's really hard to know what direction they will be taking in a few years. The more quality prospects in the system the better no matter what path they choose. I just don't see the real benefit of bringing in Gio at the expense of more of the team's future. Not when they just got swept on the last road trip by the top teams in the league.

To me, that just ensures you'll remain a middling team. Either go for it, or blow it up - nothing in between. Hedging your bets just leads to more mediocrity IMO. Having said that, I don't think bringing Gio in for a 2nd constitutes going all in... unless it is part of a bigger plan, it is more mediocrity.

Exactly. Bringing in Gio isn't going all in. It's just spending assets for minor improvement. I'm strongly in favor of a proactive rebuild, in which case I think the more assets you have the better. BUT...if they're still trying to maintain a competitive team I think I'd rather roll the dice on a 2nd round pick that maybe you hit on which actually could have an impact on the team moving forward. I think we already know what we get with Gio and it's not going to be the difference between a cup or not.

Who would do:
Monahan, Zadorov and Florida's 2nd
For
Giordano and Eberle
Gives us a right shot RW and some scoring with term.
Gio pure rental, gets his 1000 games played and retires a Flame.
Skewed in the Flames favour I think unless Monny can have some kind of resurgence.

I’d do that trade in a heartbeat personally.
If you want Gio or Ebs let alone both a 1st will be going the other way though me thinks.

Seattle would not.
They're giving up the 1st and 2nd best player, taking on a bad Monahan contract and only getting a 2nd.
Giordano will be worth a 1st at the deadline, I also wouldn't put money on Gio retiring.
Eberle, if they wanted to trade him, would be worth the 2nd alone if not a 1st.

You're right, race has nothing to do with it. What does being caucasian have to do with what country you are from?
I should point out I agree that the post you replied to wasn't a good take.

My issue with the Gio proposals is that I have never seen him elevate his play in the playoffs.....and that was when he was younger. I think he just plays at 100% all the time and when the intensity shifts up in the post season he simply doesn't have another gear.
No disrespect intended to Gio but I'd pass on trading assets for him. If he wants to sign a value contract in the off season that's a different matter.

If this team is going to spend assets I think it either needs to be on a true high end offensive talent (Hertl, Giroux), or it needs to be on a younger piece that would be here long term (Chychrun, Hischier).
Spending assets on older vets like Gio, or guys that aren't going to move the needle isn't going to help.

^^ I agree. Treliving should have a good idea now whether or not Gaudreau and Tkachuk have a future in Calgary. If they don't, replace them now and replace the assets you spend with a Tkachuk trade down the road. If they do nothing and lose both Tkachuk and Gaudreau.... oof.
