I agree, not a good take. I was sure this type of junk was over when Lidstrom lifted the cup as captain (and when Wilson won the Superbowl).

I just feel like backlund has taken a step back. He isn't the same 2-way guy we saw when he was pivoting the massively successful 3M line.
With monahan getting to replacement level, the center depth on the team is putrid after Lindholm.
The primary target to improve the team has to be center. Unfortunately, that's the hardest position to improve.
That Brodie/kadri swap could have been such a massive deal for the franchise. Grr

Same used to be said about Russians too. They won’t win you cups.
Combine the 2 countries and they are the leaders of a lot of recent cups
Hedman, Kucherov and Vasilevsky
Tarasenko
Ovechkin kuznetsov and backstrom
Malkin
This doesn’t include depth just the superstars. Literally the best 3 players on Tampa and imo if I want a cup My first overall pick in Hedman and I’m pretty sure he’s a Swede

Tkachuk and Barzal. Both players who took a bridge contract with huge qualifying offers.

I’d be onboard with that. Unfortunately, it’s the kind of blockbuster hockey trade we almost never see anymore.

Another layer to that is I have heard Pinder state that he heard the Islanders were sniffing around a Tkachuk offer sheet 3 years ago when the Flames were not getting a deal done.
Barzal is a western Canadian kid as well. I definitely wouldn’t hate it

Barzal would be a fantastic target if he was available.
I was hoping Detroit would have another poor season so that they might consider trading Larkin. It was a long shot even if Detroit had a bad season and now that they are in the hunt for a playoff spot and he’s having a good year, that seems even more unlikely.
He seems like such a perfect target for this group. Good contract although not much time left on it (1 year left after this one). A center that has great speed and finish. Would cost a lot for sure but it’s a moot point because I don’t think there is any way Yzerman would trade him.

There are lots of ways to win the Stanley Cup, you don’t win with just tough players built for the playoffs. Backlund was outstanding in the 2020 playoffs. Thought he along with Bennett were the best player for the Flames in that run.

I think for Backlund, it’s more so about about his confidence. I’ve seen a lot of good games from him this season and he’s still playing very well defensively. So I haven’t personally seen a drop off in ability. He’s extremely snake bitten from what I’ve seen though. Lots of chances, just no finish which has sort of plagued him forever.
My belief is that he needs to play a cycle game and he needs players he can cycle the puck with. That’s Mangiapane and Matthew Tkachuk. This was a great line. Problem is Matthew is doing very well on the top line, so I’d prefer not to split them up just to get this line going. So it comes down to Treliving in my opinion, can he find someone on the market who can be that Tkachuk to Backlund-Mangiapane. If he can, then this team might just have a chance.

If you look at Backlunds history and think of when he typically plays well you will see a trend that he’s a slow starter who usually heats up right about now. He always plays solid hockey but the offence normally doesn’t come until January. I’m not worried about backlund as he’s about to start to chip in

Here is my wishful fix. I feel its close and possible.
Monahan,1st,3rd,Wolf,Zary,Killington,Pitlik for Lawson Crouse, Jakob Chychrun.
Then I hate to stir this up but I sign Kane for the rest of the season.

I like this but I don't think that'd enough to get it done. I'd say valimaki, dube, hanifin, 1st, 2nd for chychrun, crouse

id rather trade valamaki over killington right now as this is more in the window. hanifin is a killer to as he is undervalued here as a top 4 and needed.

I’d like Kane, Hertl, Klingberg, and Giordano.
2022 1st, 2022 2nd (x2), 2023 1st, 2023 2nd, Monahan and Valimaki can go out.
Gaudreau - Lindholm - Tkachuk
Mangiapane - Hertl - Kane
Coleman - Backlund - Pitlick
Lucic - Dube - Lewis
Ritchie
Giordano - Klingberg
Hanifin - Andersson
Kylington - Tanev
Markstrom
Vladar
…this seems reasonable, no?…no?

Team looks good the future looks bleak and likely Gio is the only 1 of those 4 you acquire that would be here in the fall

If Dallas is selling, Klingberg + Pavelski is enough.
I would unload a huge package for those two.
