That’s just a bad trade for Edmonton. Hopefully they do something like that.

I was on board for Kane when he was originally let go but man this guy cannot stop doing stupid things. I really hope he enjoys Edmonton and then doesn't.

To be clear that wasn’t something they were proposing. It was an email from a listener

Yikes
How are the Flames signing Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Mangiapane and Klingberg?
Literally giving up 3 good young assets to dump Monahan for 2 guys that walk in the summer
Klingberg wants 8x8

I think John Klingberg is a top 10 defenseman in the world, but he's having a bit of a down year. He has picked it up as of late.
He might sign a surprisingly reasonable deal due to the down year.
I would be concerned about his durability as he gets into his 30s.

Flames need scoring/skill
Klingberg doesn’t really fill a big need, but his CAP would handcuff us for other big contracts.
Backlund, Monahan, Zadorov, Lucic and to some extent Coleman make too much for what they bring. I know… these guys perform well from time to time but you can’t have 3/4th liners making 4+ mil consistently

It's ok if Pavelski walks after a long playoff run, and we don't know yet if we're resigning gaudreau and Tkachuk so he can be a really good backup plan. Or more moves could be made to further accommodate.

You , basically, with your last paragraph, explained why your first sentence will not be rectified this season.
Their best bet is to get back to playing airtight team defence. They’re not going to score 5 or 6 goals a game.
They are fully capable of allowing less than 3 goals a game. Look at the team’s goals against, the first 23-25 games of the season.
Back to hard work, defence first, and winning puck battles. That’s the solution, this season.

Not bad at all for 2 premium rentals. Sign me up. We can figure who we want to re-sign after the season.
But no way this package gets it done.

Look at Sutter’s magical deadline acquisitions in 2004. Forward depth improved a ton and the guys acquired were able to score once in a while.
We should be so lucky this time around.

Salary cap? That’s the difference.

I read that the Flames will have 5m+ at the deadline this year.
That gives them options.
Could fit Toffoli without moving any salary out.

You read wrong, from what I see.
1.8 million is the max available.

Here is a trade thought that popped into my head based on absolutely nothing. There is no smoke or fire to any of what I'm about to say. E5.
Detroit is a team on the cusp of exiting a rebuild. They are currently fighting for the final playoff spot in the East, during a growth year for their recent draftees. They are not looking for 'old' players, but rather long term solutions. They have a ridiculous amount of cap space and flexibility. They lack sandpaper other than Bertuzzi.
They have a player in Filip Zadina who is underperforming. He is at the lowest trade value of his career, but Yzerman isn't an idiot and can see that. He can also see the potential risk in a players development. Here is an interesting article that speculates that the problem may be with deployment and usage :
Quote:
These analytical observations jive with the eye test, too. The line of Zadina, Suter, and Fabbri features three smaller skaters without a power forward to battle for possession down low. The first line has Tyler Bertuzzi in this role. When skating with Suter and Fabbri, this has been Zadina’s assignment, which doesn’t exactly align with his skill set.
|
https://thehockeywriters.com/red-win...-filip-zadina/
Vlad Namesnikov is someone who has been on the UFA and trade radar the last couple of seasons. He is a Sutter player, responsible and chips in at a second line rate.
Jon Berggren is a talented playmaker, and has succeeded at every level so far. Plays both wings. Second coming of Tanguay?
-------------------
This idea comes solely from reading through some of the Johnny and Matthew signing thread. I think that Johnny signs a long term deal. I also think that watching the games this year, Tkachuk isn't driving the play on that line. He is doing great, and is incredibly skilled. The kind of player that I want on the team. I also can't shake the thought that he takes the qualifying offer and walks. There is also a potential problem signing three wingers to big money, long term deals.
So, those three pieces and a protected first. Enough?
RW depth becomes Mangiapane - Namesnikov - Zadina - Ritchie instead of Tkachuk - Mangiapane - Ritchie - Lewis that it is now. Could the team still thrive?
Yzerman would salivate over a top six of Bertuzzi - Larkin - Tkachuk/Vrana - Fabbri - Raymond. In a year Calgary would have a line of Pelletier - Zary - Zadina. Berggren as a floating winger instead instead of all of the flotsam we have collected this year.
Do we believe in Mangiapane?
