This article talks about Arturi Lehkonen, and his availability and cost. Personally, IMO he would be a fantastic addition to the RW middle six position. He challenges or exceeds Backlunds ability as a defensive forward. He isn't an offensive black hole.
The addition allows for a player with offensive upside to try out on the fourth line, and move Ritchie/Lewis/Richardson into a 12th/13th/Taxi rotation and injury replacement.
Dube - Backlund - Mangiapane
Coleman - Monahan - Lehkonen
Lucic - Richardson - Phillips
Quote:
In addition to the way he plays, he makes only $2.3 million, which, by the deadline, equates to a very digestible cap hit. He’s also a restricted free agent when his deal expires, leaving him under team control for one more year. So, a reasonable bump in pay over a longer deal isn’t likely to cripple the team that acquires him.

...but I don’t think rival GMs need to feel he’s going to do that to give up at least a second-round pick for him. I think most GMs do believe there’s some untapped offensive potential there.

I was totally wrong about him too. Never thought he could get over the turnovers. And NEVER EVER thought he would excel under Sutter who wouldn't tolerate turnovers from his blueliners.

I think bringing in another LS winger makes no sense unless he is of top line or at the very least top 6 calibre.

Saw on my google feed an article from Nhltraderumours.me on the flames most valuable trade pieces. Names listed were Dube, Zadorov, 1st rd pick and Valimaki. Aside from not really being our most valuable trade pieces, the article claimed Valimaki makes league minimum for this season and next....he makes double that.

Honestly, I’d actually forgotten all about Valimaki. Unless he brings back a bonafide top six guy I’d be saving Valimaki to plug holes in our defence next year.

I'm not sure I agree.
If we are bringing in a forward for the top 6 it probably should be a center.
But we still need an improvement to our bottom 6 wingers.
We have Tkachuk, Gaudreau, Coleman, and Mangiapane as guys that can be top 6 wingers. That is actually pretty strong.
Problem is we have Lucic, Dube, Lewis, Richardson, Pitlick, and Ritchie as bottom 6 wingers.
Improving on one of those guys is still valuable, even if they don't improve on any of the wingers in the top 6.

Lehkonen is not better than Lucic and is likely somewhat equivalent to Dube. I hope that Dube is actually better, but right now they're playing similarly.
That covers all of our LW slots, through the bottom 6. If we're going for a bottom 6 winger, we should obviously prefer a RHS. Further, Lehkonen is actually an offensive blackhole.

But he would still be a big improvement on any of Richardson, Lewis, Ritchie, or Pitlick which is the point.
We seem to be more fixated on the hand of the shot for our wingers than Sutter is. He's played all of Mangiapane, Coleman, Lucic, and Dube on both LW and RW this season and hasn't seemed to have an issue with playing a winger on their offside.
Sure a RH shot would be preferred, but to be honest they are harder to acquire and are a more limited commodity. Anything that can push Richardson and Ritchie out of the lineup is good at this point.

We don’t need bottom 6 LWers.
As of right now, if we slotted everyone in accordingly:
Gaudreau-Lindholm-Tkachuk
Mangiapane-
Coleman-Backlund-
Lucic-Monahan-Dube
When you consider we have Pellitier and Pospisil in the AHL as LS wingers who look like they can be NHLers I really see no need for adding another leftshot winger unless it greatly improves our top 6.

He really hasn’t had much a choice TBF. There’s only one RHS in the top 8 scoring forwards and he plays centre. The next in the depth chart is Pitlick.

Sure but this is misleading because there are no assets or Cap Space to go get a top 6 Center, a top 6 winger, and a top 9 winger. Also
Coleman/Mangiapane have both played RW, and can both be top 6 forwards, so not sure we really need another player there.
In reality it's more like.
Gaudreau-Lindholm-Tkachuk
Mangiapane-???? -Coleman
??? - Backlund - Dube
Lucic - Monahan - Lewis
If you can get another top 6 center to push both Backlund and Monahan down then that's ideal, but a third line winger (LW or RW it doesn't really matter) is still needed to help this team. And I agree it could be Phillips or Pelletier, but our coach/GM don't seem to want to give those rookies a shot.

There seems a decent likelihood of losing Johnny to free agency. Unless he clearly intends to stay, I think if this is our last shot with him as our best player - poop or get off the pot.
The lineup is good, but has a few holes. Florida swing exposed the team. Sell some futures and go for it. Hertl, Pavelski or Gireaux or the like. Someone on the back end pending UFA. Figure out a way to make it work.
Tweaking won't put us over the top, status quo won't get us there. Just go for it.
Cup or bust. If it doesn't work, just start a rebuild.

Giroux, Pavelski. Those are the types I think we need to shoot for.

I like what Pat was talking about seeing if they can sell a rebuilding team on taking Monahan’a contract. The example he gave was Hertl. 1st+prospect+Monahan as the package.
I don’t think this team should spend a 1st on a rental unless that player signs long term but this team will be in tough to keep their existing team together let alone adding a significant piece beyond the season

I'd be down for this as long as johnny and Tkachuk could be signed as well. I would not be that happy if it was pelletier tho

I know he has been snake bitten but 9 points in 31 games out of Coleman doesn’t scream clear cut 2nd liner to me.
He is a 3rd liner that can shutdown other teams top lines, which is fine. Let him and Backlund serve in that role on the 3rd line.
We have 4 players who are clear top 6 forwards.

Serivalli says the Jackets continue to shop Domi. I dont like that Idea for the Flames. Although bringing up the Jackets did make think of Laine and if he'd be available. IDC about anything else he brings except that LW powerplay RHS one timer to the table. Maybe the 2nd best shot in the game. That's what we need. We have enough of the 200ft variety, we need some elite offensive skill.

I would struggle giving up a combination of Pelletier/Zary/Coronato/future 1sts for anything other than a long term high end player. 2 of those pieces for Chychrun? Sure but for a Hertl or Giroux? No chance.
