It’s not even consistent with Alberta’s COVID rules (unless they’re changing in 30 minutes and that’s it?). Why do you even need to forfeit.
People are testing negative, they should be allowed to play.

What you’re saying involves common sense. I believe the vaccines target that.

That older people are more at risk and that the virus could mutate? I thought that was pretty common knowledge to anyone with a high school education.

Not everyone has a high school education. But it is also obvious to folks without a high school education, my uncle has a grade 9 education and he has taken the brave stand of believing the scientists on this one.

You're right, a lot of very smart people didn't graduate from high school. I just mean't it's pretty common knowledge (not to mention common sense).

That's not what benvoyonsdonc said, and you know it.
Older people more at risk ≠ every old person is going to die of COVID.
The virus could mutate ≠ it will certainly mutate into a form that will spread like wildfire and be far more lethal than any previous strain if we don't cancel the WJC.
Don't pretend you are defending a sane position here.

Over a population of billions of people, with hundreds of millions of iterations, the chance is definetly there that it could mutate into a deadly and fast spreading strain.
Is that a chance you want to take? And for what gain?

I know it is easy to make fun of red deer - but whose responsibility was it to make sure the players and the regular folk were separated. Does not seem like a hard thing to do.
The organizers have taken a real bath on this for the past two years. I thought hockey Canada sold the tourney to local organizers, but perhaps I mistaken about that.

I feel awful for the players. For many of them this was their only/final chance at playing for their country at a major international tournament.

No, there is no such chance. In the first place, a virus does not magically acquire DNA out of nowhere that causes it to infect people with a radically different disease. In the second place, there is a well-known genetic tradeoff between lethality and transmissibility in viruses. The literature on the subject is quite clear.
I am not taking any chance at all, because the chance of what benvoyonsdonc is describing is zero.

Curious what actions they took to insulate the players once they knew Omicron was a threat. Even with weddings and that going on at the hotel or whatever, you need to pivot as best you can.
Water under the bridge now but it’s clear that avoiding a positive test in this environment takes a lot of effort.

Uh, mutation is a random copying error. No magic required, it’s just a matter of odds. When you have billions of viral particles being generated in billions of hosts, the math tends to favor significant and sometimes seriously deadly mutations. I wouldn’t hang my hat on that rhetoric.

Spector says this wasn’t the organizers’ fault. Which makes me think it was.
He also rejects Finland’s complaints about the tourney in general and bases this assessment on the fact no coach complained about the bubble. He called Finland’s coach “literally a voice in the wilderness”.

I can’t think of a journalist who I hold in lower regard than Spector. Nothing but trash takes and zero integrity.
