Champion!
Its all over but the crying now...the results for the 3rd Annual F1 CalPuck Championship are in
In a fitting end to the season, DoubleK got 10/10 right with 3 correct slots to win the week and the Overall Title. Dominant season for you, congrats. You led in correct slots by 7 over second. You get first pick of the prizes, just DM me your selection. ( https://forum.calgarypuck.com/showpo...&postcount=365)
And in a tight race for second, TimSJ comes from well behind to nip Btimbit in the final race. TimSJ had 10/10 picks as well and 2 correct slots for 18pts. Congrats for a comeback win to nab 2nd. You get the other prize.
Btimbit, sorry man, you went 8/10 with no correct slots and takes 3rd overall...
I will coordinate with Agulati to get the trophy back as well for DoubleK and can DM the winners for pickup.

Congrats winners! At least we know we can depend on our officiating here! Thanks for running it FLAMESRULE, and only 3 months until we get to see what these new cars can do!

Maybe, or the stewards review it and see that Max has a half a car length on him and has earned the corner...the big question would become whether Max would have stayed on the track without pinballing Lewis - we know the answer to be yes, but that would have been very tough to judge if there was contact.

No argument...it's a nearly identical situation to Silverstone where Lewis had one desperate chance or else he wasn't going to have the pace.

Lots of negative F1 press out today regarding the decision.
Maybe more accurate is to say disappointing and a decision not worthy the great battle between these drivers/teams.

Yeah, while I'm not a Max fan at all, its not the outcome that I'm upset about - its how that outcome was decided that I have a serious problem with.

Yeah. Agreed.
Enjoyed reading this USA Today story.
After an incredible Formula One season, did it really have to end this way?
Quote:
Verstappen did nothing wrong. Hamilton did nothing wrong. Red Bull did nothing wrong. Mercedes did nothing wrong. They all played the hand they were dealt, but whether that hand should have been dealt in the first place is what is now up for such controversial debate.
The only entity that might have done something wrong is the FIA’s race director – or race control as a wider group – and that just isn’t the way this season should have ended. It doesn’t do it justice.
Whoever won the championship should be celebrating the greatest title of recent years. Dare I say it, perhaps ever. Two absolute megastars pushed each other to the highest of highs – and sometimes dragged each other to the lowest of lows – over 22 races and could not be separated until seven corners from the end of the entire season. It’s remarkable.
But there’s a ‘TBC’ against Verstappen’s name for now, and Hamilton surely won’t get even 10 percent of the enjoyment he’d deserve if he is crowned champion by an overturned decision.
I thought it was unfair that so much focus was being put on a potential collision between the two pre-race, and even said so to both drivers. But they took it in stride, because they each knew that aspect was in their own hands.
The way they raced so thrillingly on both the first and last laps showed exactly why, with millimeters between them at times but no contact. A collision was not how either of them wanted to win it.
But waiting so long for confirmation, or to be retrospectively instated as champion via the International Court of Appeal, is not how either of them wanted to win it, either.
It’s not what either of them deserves, and it’s not of their own doing.

All of the options would have had bad optics. Probably worse optics.

The race director needs to talk to the teams. The teams don't need to talk to the race director

Finishing under the safety car would have been the best option that was consistent with the race at the time, because Max was not gaining on Lewis before Latifi crashed. If Max had been storming through the field, hunting Lewis down, I could see the argument for giving him a chance to catch Lewis. But that's not the case. Masi didn't give Lewis a chance to defend himself. By his odd, inconsistent decision, he all but guaranteed a Max win, or a crash(which would be a Max win). The idea that Lewis and Merc had any options at all strategically is nonsense. Masi decided the outcome, not Max or Lewis. And that's what fans are frustrated by. But keep grinding that axe, you'll come up with a logical position one day.

The only crazier thing than the way played out on sunday will be if courts decide that Hamilton is champion in a few weeks or months lol

Ya, we don't need that, either. We do need some major changes though. I'm amazed from Spa that they don't even have a way to handle that situation. Just make it up on the spot. And if they are going to make rulings around pushing drivers off the track, make it consistent for the season. Even if they realize later it isn't quite right, be consistent until next season.

But the track was clear and ready to race. Why don't we just call every race after the 1st stint? Because it would be a shame if something unpredictable happens and the fastest car doesn't win every single race...
So much pearl clutching about the last 5km of a ~7000km season.
0 cars can unlap themselves. or 4 cars. or all the lapped cars can. In a vacuum, is this even in the top 5 most controversial decisions this year? Was it even the most controversial decision/non-decision in the race? There's a very strong chance that all 3 options end with the same result.

No there's not. Not even close.
Option 1. Zero cars. Hamilton cruises home with a clear track in front and cars between himself and Max
Option 2. Four cars. What happened.
Option 3. All cars. The race finishes under the safety car with Lewis in P1

Finishing under safety car would have seen massively more controversy.

I'd say Option 1 is about 50/50 (Maybe 60/40 to Lewis)... There is a chance that those lapped cars get out of Max's way for immediately and Max manages to chases down Lewis, there was potential for a Max dive bomb near the end of the lap to pass Lewis (at which point there is likely a steward investigation if either go off track, which would have made it even more controversial)

More controversial but more defensible per regulations.

There is no such thing as "more defensible". They either have the power to do something or they do not.
