Probably cost a lot more and would more than likely be just a rental. I hate wasting assets on expensive rentals. Although I do like the player more.

Could want out of Montreal too
He didn’t sign there to be part of a rebuild
Gallagher would also be interesting

Maybe he'd be happy to join little Sweden?

Maybe, and if that's the case maybe he can be a free agent consolation prize if Gaudreau walks.

Hate to burst everyone's bubbles, but I don't think the Flames can afford to target any player with term. So basically, a rental would likely be the only realistic option.
I just had an in depth look at the Flames cap situation next season again and if Treliving manages to re-sign #13, #19, #58 and #88 to pretty reasonable deals, the Flames would not only be several million over the salary cap, but they would also have a significant number of players to sign on top of it.
Also, I've made the assumption that the Flames will not be re-signing Zadarov, Pitlick and Gudbranson. If the Flames do want to re-sign Gudbranson who has done everything that's been asked of him, then a big contract like Monahan has to go. But that's assuming he can even be traded at all. Not sure how many teams are knocking down the door to trade for a player with no even strength goals nearly 20 games into the season. Hopefully a buyout isn't necessary because that's over $2M of dead cap space over 2 years.
So in terms of realistic trade targets.....we should be looking at expiring contracts or players signed under a million.

Not sure if he was a big Flames fan, but Crouse did mention in a pre-draft interview on Coach's Corner that his favorite player was Jarome Iginla. He was also best buds with Sam Bennett from their time together playing with the Kingston Frontenacs, and they even lived together there.

Non-rentals don't make much sense on a core with Mangiapane/Kylington/Gaudreau/Tkachuk signed next year.
The only way a non-rental would make any sense is if it's a centre of the tier of .... you know who.

With this type of start, I am very much in the camp that you acquire whoever as long as the personnel fit is good and you think it increases the cup chances. Then you worry about cap/ other repercussions in the summer. This seems to be what Tampa does and boy is it ever working out.

I'm sure that Bennett has given him a glowing report on his time with Calgary....

The Flames have made it clear they aren’t interested in trading for rentals. If you think it’s going to be a rental, and they trade for him, they have information that we don’t regarding an extension. It’s so exhausting to read as a rebuttal to everyone’s ideas. “But he will be a rental”, said so definitively. When Treliving has said that he isn’t moving assets for rentals.

Treliving has never been one to give up significant assets for a rental. Meaning, do not expect him to be trading a first round pick or controllable asset for Hertl or Forsberg, as an example.
On the other hand, he has given up midround picks for depth rentals. A 4th for Forbort as an example. People whine incessantly about this, but there is an ebb and flow to these transactions. The Flames receiving a 3rd for Rittich as example.

The only thing BT should be concentrating on is inking #13. The team is fine as is, no need to look for a trade or additions right now. Address that in the offseason.

Put me down for targeting Gourde.
You can't go wrong with pairings with cup pedigree.
If you can also ship Monahan and look at a Kravtsov to add skill to your right side that would be savvy as well.

Not that this matters to much but BT was in Toronto while the Flames were in Buffalo on Thursday night. He was in the lobby of the Ritz around 3 pm which seemed weird to me. Leafs were playing the Rangers.

Doesn't have to be fancy. But adding an RFA like Kravstov would be brilliant. Doesn't break banks today or next year and onward, and you're adding a top 6 forward. Or middle six with scoring potential. Either way, thats a small deal that works for the Flames situation today and tomorrow.

When major acquisitions are made, for rentals, it often disrupts the chemistry of the team.
I think Kravstov would improve the on-ice performance, pay off in the future, and wouldn't break the bank. He could move the needle just the right amount.

I wonder what it would cost to acquire Lawson Crouse, and if he'd be a good fit for this team and Sutter.
Definitely seems like a fit for Sutter, but being a left shot left wing he might not be the best fit for the roster.
Love the idea of adding a 6'4 220lb monster to the forward group though.

One rental option I was thinking about : Jeff Carter.
- Obviously has a history with Sutter and his systems so should take less time for him to fit in compared to other potential acquisitions
- Right hand shot that can play RW/C that would be a top 9 forward on the Flames
- Half his cap hit is already retained by the Kings and final year of his contract
- Good possession metrics this season and was good for the Pens in the playoffs
- No trade protection*
The tricky part is that does a team with Crosby and Malkin ever decide to become sellers? Probably not if a playoff spot is within striking distance.
Also Carter has shown in the past he can get pouty if he gets traded where he doesn't want to go. (see Columbus and the rumors that he would retire if the Kings were to trade him). But if it is for a cup run with a coach he flourished under, maybe he would be open to it.
Of course a 37 year old rental will not appeal to most of the fan base. But if the Flames do go down the rental path and the Pens continue to struggle I think Carter checks most of the boxes.
