On the second one he was going to bat the puck away with his blocker towards the neutral zone but then the deflection happened and his momentum pulled him away and he was unable to get back in time. Sure, had he not tried to do that he might have been able to stop it but there's no guarantee it doesn't sneak through anyway.

Again, it's easy to say he should have did something different on a replay but in real-time it's not so easy to read deflections. In the end it shouldn't have mattered because the team's response should have been a lot better than it was.

I agree, especially on the deflection

Let’s talk about not just reading, but physically responding to deflections

Average human reaction time to visual stimulus is 250 ms, and 200 ms, or 0.2 seconds, is very good. Let’s say NHL goalies are closer to 200
Let’s say a decent shot speed is 80 miles per hour, or 117 feet per second

Multiplying those together, you get 0.2 x 117 = 23.4

A deflected puck will move over 23 feet before a goalie begins to physically respond to it

The faceoff dot is 30 feet from the Center of the net, and a goalie is typically about 4 feet out.

So long story short, when a player is in tight and a goalie expects a deflection, you can try to position yourself to account for it

But those deflections that happen 25-30 feet out that look brutal, where the goalie appears to misread it and flail at it too late? They really aren’t. It’s science.

Really happy to see monahan get between some more skilled wingers. He's definitely been working hard, but his puck handling just isn't a forte. Hopefully he finds more slot opportunities, playing with more offensive guys.

Habs suck. Go flames!

I believe in the Flames so much right now that I took them in a parlay bet with them and the Kings winning tonight. Come on Flames, Captain needs a new pair of shoes.

Maybe that's done.

For sure I'm reading a lot into a comment, but it sounded like he almost gave that away but then backed it off.

Anyway, if that's the case this was always the plan and Monahan didn't have a whole lot to whine about.

These lines provide decent balance and get Mangiapane and Monahan a bigger role which I think is huge for scoring depth.

And Dube / Backlund on a third line is no slouch either.

Pitlick to the fourth gives Lucic someone to play with.
I wish there was a replay somewhere, but I swear Bell and/or Hrudey were talking about Monahan's recovery during the last broadcast -- and they were saying with the type of surgery he had, he isn't really expected to be back to normal for another couple months still.

True, I can certainly understand that, I like this take on it. At game speed it's not always an easy read, and the team could have responded better and capitalized on their chances.
I feel like the slow motion replays make it look worse for sure...

What secrets does Zadorov know. He is awful and shouldn't be dressing ahead of Valimaki.

Line changes look pretty good. I was getting bored of them winning the same way anyway.

Think that's a bit harsh.

Zadorov has recovered pretty nicely actually.

He's 2nd for defensemen in CF% and 2nd for xGF%. For a shut down guy that's just money.

He's first in xGA/60.

His last four games have featured xGF% of 79%/60%/73% and 68%

That's exceeding my expectations to be honest, and by a fair margin.

Valimaki is 7th (of 8 ahead of Stone) in all those categories.

Well you've changed my mind. Didn't realize his advanced stats were that good.

Guess it's the (young) Brodie effect. Mistakes are glaring but otherwise a solid game.

All good.

He's never going to wow anyone with the puck or offensively. So really if you don't notice him at all it's a good thing.

In general, the whole team smelled like dog buns last game, but Monahan has looked pretty good in the last half of the games this season. I am not saying he didn't earn the promotion, but part of me wonders since the team is going on an eastern road trip, if they might be show casing him.
