I suspect this is more of a comment on Dube. Sutter wanted him at C but his faceoffs are not where they should be and Sutter is a big guy for faceoffs. He may figure Backlund is good for getting guys going.

Dube-Backlund-Lucic worked so maybe Lewis will work the same. Coleman-Monahan-Mangiapane is what a lot of people wanted, so we'll see.

Over zadorov? Odd take

Thought we might see Valimaki back in after the loss, especially with Zadorov getting caught out of position a few times. Sutter must not like what he’s seeing from Valimaki in practice.

From listening to Treliving the other day I almost thought he let it slip that Monahan was still recovering from surgery and that the lessened even strength responsibilities was the final phase of his recovery.

Maybe that's done.

For sure I'm reading a lot into a comment, but it sounded like he almost gave that away but then backed it off.

Anyway, if that's the case this was always the plan and Monahan didn't have a whole lot to whine about.

These lines provide decent balance and get Mangiapane and Monahan a bigger role which I think is huge for scoring depth.

And Dube / Backlund on a third line is no slouch either.

Pitlick to the fourth gives Lucic someone to play with.

Both players had warts last game and made mistakes that lead to goals but Zad did make a great defensive play late to keep the flames in it. Tough to say for sure and honestly was choosing Gudbranson as he’s played a considerable amount of games in a row while Zad has managed to draw back in for just a few games in a row here. Have to manage wear and tear and Gudbranson has been playing heavy minutes and from the get go and to me it looked like it had caught up to him against the Sharks. My opinion obviously but take it for what it’s worth.

With the top line as it is, I don't think you could ask for a better combo for Monahan. Big opportunity, if he can start producing at 5v5 that really rounds out the roster nicely.

Yes, looking forward to what Monahan can do with linemates who can actually complete a pass to him when he finds that soft spot in the slot, which I have been seeing more frequently in the past few games.

That's the 2nd line I've been waiting to see since camp. Coleman should be such a natural for with Monny. And with Mangiapanes penchant for shooting , Monahan has a great chance at cleaning up a ton of garbage.

It's easy to say he should have put his paddle down watching a replay.
Breakaways are 50/50 for a goalie and even harder when someone shoots that close.

and the 2nd one was a complete miss with his glove - he had already read the deflection and goes to catch it and completely misses.
On the second one he was going to bat the puck away with his blocker towards the neutral zone but then the deflection happened and his momentum pulled him away and he was unable to get back in time. Sure, had he not tried to do that he might have been able to stop it but there's no guarantee it doesn't sneak through anyway.

Again, it's easy to say he should have did something different on a replay but in real-time it's not so easy to read deflections. In the end it shouldn't have mattered because the team's response should have been a lot better than it was.

I thought Sutter said that was the plan all along? At any rate, Monahan has definitely looked better (faster, more aggressive) the last couple of games, specifically the last one. What a bonus if that line puts up some offense. Looking forward to seeing how it plays out.

I would have removed the "but" and had "and" in your sentence.

There is value in those types of players. Fans generally don't see it, but if you can get 10-12 minutes of nothing bad happens it allows the top six to win the game with good things happening.

I hope Coleman takes advantage of this opportunity as both he and Mangiapane I feel have been underutilized to date.

That Monahan line looks like a "need to get these guys going" line.

Though there's a few others that could fit that.

Dube
Pitlick
Backlund
