But they've sold off their last high tier prospect (that had 2 more years of ELC), that middle six guy was on a very team friendly deal, and placed themselves in Cap Hell as early as this year but certainly next. And right now the best they can hope for is that they are permitted to hide Eichel on LTIR until the playoffs, while hoping they can actually get into the playoffs. Remember, Kucherov was initially projected to be around second round for a return and came back early. It's a different beast when the projections are early.

I hope Eichel is close enough to sniff the Olympics. It puts a hole in the LTIR life raft the Knights will need if Eichel and his agent are lobbying to be part of Team USA while Vegas is hoping to hide him until the cap doesn't matter. Jack is already getting paid, and now getting his surgery. There is no incentive for him to accept not playing in the Olympics just for Vegas.

Even if they somehow manage it, I also don't think their roster is just a Jack Eichel away from sealing the deal and winning the cup.

It's pro sports.

Being embarassed by tank talk is hilariously uppity.

The Oilers fans this board makes so much fun of are enjoying their poorly constructed team still be ahead of our incredible start in the standings. Could they use depth? Yeah. Which is a lot easier than acquiring the pieces that give them an unstoppable PP. But I'm sure we can make fun of them for playing their stars 25+ minutes while we have a 13M fourth line.

I don't care what the Spurs did if they did in fact deliberately tank. Just because it happened for them doesn't mean it would happen for the Flames or any other team.

Most teams that end up with star players aren't tanking. They just suck. I think many teams just suck so bad fans think they're losing on purpose when they aren't.

The Oilers have had a buttery soft schedule so far with the benefit of playing tired teams playing their backup or third stringers. I'm not going to put much stock into their record.

CP acting like a bunch of kids who didn't get the shiny new toy they wanted from Santa.

Team is looking better than when they won the west so far. Now they have a cup winning elite coach so they don't get caved in the playoffs.

Friedman mentioned the Flames offer was all picks and prospects. Sabres wanted Krebs. So be it. I'm going to enjoy watching the Flames pound the Stars tonight. First game against them since the playoffs in the bubble. I bet Markstrom doesn't implode like Talbot did. And I bet Sutter would handle it a heck of a lot better if he did.

Based on Bader's model Zary actually has a better chance of being a star at this point.
Bader's model doesn't matter. Only Buffalo's opinion does.
Most experts, for whatever they are worth, rank Krebs much higher.

Even the best team in the NHL is always looking to improve.

I hate to break this to you, but the Flames are not the best team in the NHL.

The Spurs situation was taking advantage of a situation and then being extremely lucky. Basketball teams go from good to terrible as a result of losing one guy. That one guy got hurt for the Spurs. They lucked out and won a lottery (they had 3rd best odds). They could have easily ended up with Keith Van Horn or Tony Battie instead of Duncan.

Tanking is fine if you have a path to get out of it. But if the Flames are going to tank - they need to load up on draft picks instead of losing guys for nothing and then pray you win a lottery.

Buffalo tanked to get McDavid. They lost that lottery to the Oilers and they are still spinning their wheels and picking 1st every 2nd draft.

Exactly. Krebs is much flashier at minimum.

The Calgary offer of picks and prospects doesn't make any sense. How was that going to help with the cap situation? This is damage control.

We wouldn't want to let one of the team's best starts in recorded human history get in the way of a few good soul-sucking tirades about the poor state of the team.

What are you taking about? Where did I say the Flames were the best team in the NHL? I said they are looking better than that year. Do you disagree?

Tough pill to swallow that’s for sure.

It’s just deflating to always be in on these deals but finish as the runner up.

We are stuck in a cycle of constant mediocrity and disappointment, and it’s finally starting to wear on this diehard.

I still have hopes for the season but this was a straight kick in the nuts and I don’t know what to think or how to feel about the future of the organization given this seasons success or lack there of will impact so many aspects of the organization as a whole.

When Edmonton, Vegas and soon to be Anaheim and LA all have elite talent it really makes one feel hopelessness about our chances over the next 5-10 years unless we shift the organizational mindset into doing what it takes to build a winner.

I just don’t have confidence that we will be anything more than mediocre for the foreseeable future.

Even when we do all the right things a guy like Fox bails on us and goes and wins a Norris elsewhere.

It’s just constant kicks to the gonads.

And that could be the Flames. We trade Johnny and Tkachuk for assets now, and see what happens. Better to have the 3rd best odds than no odds at all.

YES! The Flames need to get back pick+A-prospects for guys like Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Monahan, Backlund and Tanev. They can hang onto Hanifin, Andersson, Kylington, Valimaki, Mangiapane, Lindholm and still be bad enough to be bad for a couple of years. Then see how the draft works out. Plus in a year's time you have Lucic as an enticing contract for a cap floor team, you might even get an asset for him after you pay his signing bonus

Buffalo's failure to build around Eichel is a testament to how asset-poor they were, much as the Flames will be if they let Gaudreau walk for nothing and then get bent over in the Tkachuk situation.

The time to declare a rebuild is the minute you've established that you can't get Gaudreau re-signed to a fair extension. He can't be your "own rental" like Brodie a couple years ago.

They didn't offer Tkachuk though is the point

Monahan probably was offered but he probably doesn't have a ton of value
