Some here underselling Tuch are the same people who insist we don't trade Mangiapagne. If the trade was Mange + Coronato + 1st + 2nd (since Coronato isn't as highly viewed as Krebs), would people here still do it?

Vegas did the one thing the Flames couldn't: take on an extra $5M in salary...for now. Sure, Buffalo has all the space in the world, but $5M more is pretty sweet, especially if they can turn it into an Arizona situation and take on everyone else's bad contracts for tons of picks and prospects.
From that viewpoint, the Flames didn't have a chance. They had to match salary, no matter who they sent. Adding a couple prospects and picks wasn't going to solve that.

Tuch is a nice piece.
2022 1st is good but having top 10 protection really reduces its value.
I wouldn't like that return as a Sabres fan.
|
That protection makes it harder for sabres fans because they now have to cheer for Vegas to be a bad team for two years consecutively. This year, they’ll want Vegas finish with a 10th overall pick… worst pick they can have while still deferring the pick to next season. Then in 2022-2023, the sabres fans will want Vegas to fall apart and finish at the bottom of the league so the deferred 1st round pick in 2023 will have a chance at being Bedard.
Even one of these two finishes is extremely unlikely. Let alone both of the them to happen. Worst part is that this is likely their best shot at winning this trade.

I would too. But I just wanted to point out Tuch isn't just some throw in. He's part of the main trade.

That's just a funny way of referring to cheering for the team to lose.
Fulfilling the conditions required to get better is called winning. Winning = points, more points = better, better enough = playoffs, and winning in the playoffs = Stanley Cup.
Losers cheer for losses, plain and simple.

I would make that trade.
Mango is a great player, but he's SUPER hot right now. All time high hot. He's likely to come back to earth at least a bit. The fact is we have other players in the same mold as Mango who we could hope will fill his role for less money. We don't have a jack eichel comparable piece.
+ I think there is likely a lot of pain in our future in resiging mango. You could tell he felt slighted (maybe rightly) by the last round of contract negotiations. We're going to have to pony up if we want to keep him. I am not sure he will be worth it at 7 long term. He probably looks at coleman at least and says "i deserve more than him."

Tuch is a solid middle six winger with a long track record of opportunity + average production behind him after a high draft slot and a major injury concern where he has just been out for six months. He is like the reverse Mang... handed a lot of ice early, but Mangiapane produces more and more every year with limited opportunity and just had a big coming out party internationally, I don't think anybody would equate them in value these days.

How Vegas goes forward will be interesting. Stone isn't out too much longer. Pacioretty has a broken foot, so he could be back in December/January. If Eichel's recovery goes perfect and he's ready in March/April, they will need to dump around $10MM before activating him. They will likely keep him on LTIR until the playoffs (if they make it), but that $10MM has to go at some point. They'll be forced to lose Smith to UFA I'm sure. But, then it's Dadonov, Marchessault, or Karlsson. The "top heavy" approach worked for Tampa, but they're starting to lose the "cheap" depth which made their success possible. Vegas is going to lose that depth right off the hop.
|
Last I looked, pretty much all their big LTIR contracts are expected back by around the Olympic break. Contrary to popular belief, Vegas can't "Kucherov" the situation, because he will be back well before the salary cap stops mattering, and it's highly unlikely they find a way to drag it out an additional 6-8 weeks. Kucherov worked out the way it did because it lined up perfectly with the playoffs. Anything the Knights do to delay Eichel will be pretty obvious and the other 31 GM's will be pretty quick to cry foul and force the NHL's hand on the matter.
The biggest problem Vegas will have is the off season. With everyone back, they will have nearly 78mil tied up in 16 players (9 forwards, 5 defense, 2 goalies), meaning around 4 million plus whatever the cap increases by to tie up at least 4 players, one of which is their top remaining prospect who is due for a raise. 8 of their existing contracts have some form of trade protection making it harder to turn around for good returns (9 if Eichel has something). The following year doesn't exactly yield a bunch of bad money off the books, as even though Patch's contract ends, it's not like they won't want to keep him based on how he has been prior to injury.
And lately Vegas has been exposed as not valuing player loyalty at all, which over time will raise the cost of signing FA's as most will either want to bake in NMC/NTC protection, or bank on the assumption they will get tossed for the next shiny toy Vegas finds.
Other posters are correct in saying that if Adams really badly wanted Krebs, then the cost to outbid isn't just making a somewhat better offer, but a MUCH better offer, and it probably just wouldn't be worth it.

I would've been ok with the rumored deal and taken it even if it backfired. It was our chance to go all in. But I hope Tre doesn't even meet the media over this, I already know what he's going to say; heard it before.

Hopefully when players start coming off LTIR for Vegas they have to sell off quality players for pennies on the dollar. I hope every other GM is noting this situation and easy to screw them right over on any return.

Losers cheer for regular season wins that ultimately result in playoff losses, you mean.
You're basically arguing that you'd rather repeat the 2018-19 season for eternity instead of have one or two down years.

Has anyone talked about how Vegas expects to fit this under the cap? Stone, Patches and Eichel are $26M on LTIR, they dont have room for all 3. I just don't understand what they're trying to do here.
Even if they pull a Tampa and all 3 come back for the playoffs what about going forward?

No, I'm arguing that I would rather cheer for wins because I'm a fan of the team and enjoy when they're doing well. If the losses happen, they happen, but I'm not cheering for the team to tank. It's pathetic, and it's even more pathetic after a hot start where the team is playing the best they've played in years to say "it's not too late to tank." I'm not going to get into Oiler fan-tiers here, but no actual fan of a team says that. We leave that domain to losers and rivals.
Losers cheer for losses. That's how you want to operate? Go nuts. Call it whatever you want. But that stuff is embarrassing.
