I wonder if Eichel becomes a piece for players to want to sign in Calgary. It worked with Hall in Buffalo (Although panned out poorly and the $ may have been more of a factor than playing with Eichel. Either way the Flames better hope people will want to come to Calgary to play with him. With the potential UFA departures of Johnny next season and Monahan the next we better hope Zary, Pelletier and Coronado are ready.

Mangipane - Eichel - Lindholm
Coleman - Dube - X
X - Backlund - X

Either way I think as an organization you need to assume guys like Pelltier, Zary and Coronado will naturally fill those X's.

Everyone is assuming it's our top prospects.
What if it's like Pospisil + Phillips.
Tkachuk + Zadorov + Popisil + Phillips + 1st doesn't look so bad.

I’m personally fine with this price for such a valuable player, but the narrative so far is that teams are “not meeting the Sabres’ asking price.”

What the hell does Adams think he’s going to get here? This package alone would be the biggest for a single player that I can recall. How much higher does the asking price go? That’s the part that I think a lot of people are questioning.

Too bad we don’t have a top 6 player stuck on the 4th line we could move up to fill Tkachuks spot.

I wonder about Eric Staal if we were to make a deal here.
Is he still fit to play in the NHL? He could be a cheap addition if he's willing.

And yeah, I suppose if Buffalo’s been asking for two firsts like the rumours have been, this is a way they’d get it.

A lot has to do with negotiations with Tkachuk and the Flames’ opinion on his cost and potential of re-signing going forward.
Yeah but Hall was a disaster in Buffalo.

I hear what you're saying, but if I'm the Sabres, Tkachuk represents the best chance to add additional 1st round picks and more to the coffers.

While not completely submarining the first good start the team has had since the Obama administration.

Now imagine we move Monahan to LW and he transitions nicely

Gaudreau - Lindholm - Dube
Monahan - Eichel - Mangiapane
Coleman - Backlund - Pitlick

Johnny isn't going anywhere, especially if Tkachuk is out and Eichel is in.

I'm less sold on his ability to contribute in the top 6 than others.

I think he can and will be better than Brodie. He's certainly got a better release which makes him more dangerous. But he's still more dangerous defensively (ie, he still makes some bad plays that can and do result in goals). That'll be gone in short order and I don't even want to say his potential outloud for fear of jinxing it. But...the sky. His limit is the sky.

Without knowing anything about the cap situation, is there any possibility this is for Eichel + a depth player? Not really sure about Buffalo's roster and who it could be. Seems ridiculous to say no to that offer if it's only for Eichel.

Again, I don't know if the cap would even work. Buffalo would be nuts to say no to that.

Maybe it will be.

I'm comfortable with a package approximating this, regardless.

Keeping Mangiapane and Dube, keeping Coronato, and possibly extending Johnny all add up to a big win for the team and the city.

I was going to say the same thing. Monohan is still a top 6 player, whether some people see it or not, in my opinion.

There is only one LW Eichel will play with and it isn’t Mony.

I feel like the inevitable "Flames" outcome of this if it goes through would be:

Tkachuk goes on to have a HOF worthy career

The picks all have serviceable NHL careers

Eichel comes in, never fully heals or doesn't return to form. Fans turn on him and he's run out of town. And we wind up with no prospect capital to look forward too for the next 3 years.

This is the problem with leaving in a GM on the hot seat who you probably should of let go after their second brain dead coach hire in a 3 year span. He's desperate and will be trying anything to hang on. It's becoming harder and harder to stay a fan of this organization. I DO NOT want Treliving at the drivers wheel of any major trades. I made my peace with him allowing his precious core have another shot this year. The last thing I want to see is this man trying to attempt a last hail mary in the 4th quarter.

I have been trying to digest this.

It seems like an over-the-top payment for an injured Eichel who may never be the same again (I hope Calgary got some good advice from top-notch surgeons).

However, this price seems like it is from 'fair' to 'bargain' for a centre of Eichel's calibre. Yes, some of you don't agree, but I see Eichel as a top 5 centre in the NHL (when healthy at least).

I am interested to know what the prospects are, but the real question is how much value does Tkachuk have. REALLY have? We know he is going to ask and sit out for 'Eichel Money'. He has that QO next season, and potentially turning UFA. If he is traded in this upcoming off-season without a long-term deal in place, how much value does he really have? I don't know. 2 1st round picks? Seems like you won't get a replacement for Tkachuk with 2 mid-range first round picks. He is essentially going to be a season long rental with an opportunity to re-sign (assuming he isn't set on going to St. Louis). I don't really know what his value is floating around at right now given his circumstances. What does Buffalo flip him for? Watch them turn around and flip him to Vegas for Krebs + a 1st.

So, all in it is:
Tkachuk
1st round pick
Pelletier or Zary or Coronato or Valimaki or Monahan (Probably not, but is the only other former 1st round pick by Calgary)
2 other prospects not named above

That's actually ok for me. However, I see Tkachuk as either 'gone' or 'soon to be overpaid by a lot', so I would rather package him up with other assets and get a better player back. Eichel - IF HEALTHY (this is the scary part for me) - is definitely worth that and more. Probably a healthy amount more IMO.

I talked myself into it. Make it happen.

Now, if this falls through, I will anticipate Calgary will be shopping Tkachuk around in a 'hockey trade', as I imagine this will close the door for him on re-signing (though maybe he will be 'all-business' anyway? It wasn't like Calgary was going to get a home-town discount at all).

Interesting. I just wonder if this is really true.
