This felt like a playoff game.
Dominate but they are playing too fancy and couldn't bury those chances and the oppositional goaltender was playing like a playoff goalie keeping their team in it.
We need to finish these off.

I’ve been thinking…
There should be a delay of game penalty when a player wilfully exits the offensive zone in overtime. I think this would force the team with possession to attack the net and also create turnovers going back the other way.
I don’t hate overtime but I hate the endless do nothing but skate in circles OT has devolved into.
Just my opinions.
Thoughts?

Players do have to leave the zone for line changes, and a penalty in 3-on-3 is a much bigger punishment than 5-on-5.
How about this? Once your team has possession in the attacking zone, if you play the puck outside the zone, it's treated as an intentional offside and the faceoff goes back to your defensive zone. Instead of successfully playing keep-away, you just created a 50-50 puck battle at your own end of the ice. That should be a sufficient deterrent.
I also like the idea of a time limit to exit your own zone with possession, as someone else mentioned, like the backcourt rule in basketball.

One of the best things about overtime is the flow. If you start to create rules that create a lot of stoppages that's going to be worse.

The constant trying to improve 3 on 3 leads me to believe it's a stupid ass gimmick to begin with and we should do away with it. You start making special rules in OT and all of a sudden its not even hockey anymore. Hockey doesn't have over-and-back rules, nor should it. Hockey is played 5 skaters v 5 skaters.
Change it to W-L-T just like soccer. 3-0-1 points system. Watch as desperate teams pour it on in the last 5-10 minutes of the 3rd period which is far more entertaining that OT or shootouts.

It would be pretty simple to add a subsection to the "delay of game" rule.

The problem of course is that in 3 on 3 OT, the probability that a missed trip or interference is going to lead to a goal the other way is increased significantly.
It happed in the VAN-NYR game last night as well.
Putting the whistles away and "letting them play" in 3 on 3 is not the way to go.

Weren't the Flames one of the first teams to perfect the OT puck hog strategy?

I don’t think anything needs to be improved about 3on3. I love it. If there must be a tie breaker, there’s not a better way. If anything it should be longer IMO. 10 min and you’d rarely see a shoot out. An over and back rule? No thanks.
What I think needs to be improved is referees calling the penalties that occur plainly in front of their face, regardless of the time or score.

5 minutes of 4 on 4, 5 minutes of 3 on 3.
If no one scores then it’s a tie.
I still don’t get why this league isn’t a 3-2-1-0 (W-OTW-OTL-L) point system.

I totally agree. I didn't mind ties and hate the fact some games disperse 3 points to the standings and some only 2.
If they wanted to cut down the number of ties, they could have expanded 5-on-5 OT to 10 minutes and reduce the number of ties by at least half, and likely more than that.

Simply because the league wants the illusion of parity as deep into the season as possible. The current system keeps it looking very close in the last month of the season, even though a person with a grasp of mathematics knows its not close at all.

Or just W-L, who needs points? However you determine how a game is decided, 3 on 3 overtime, or a shootout, or a fight at center ice, all wins should be treated equally. Imagine baseball pennant races if you had loser points for extra innings.

My suggestion would be to go back to 4 on 4 for 8 or 10 minutes. 3 on 3 is dumb.
Or you have less whistles in overtime. If a team goes offside, the puck is released and they have to clear the zone, allowing the defending team to bring the puck up.

The Heat are playing tonight and Duehr is a scratch. So, if we see a call-up tomorrow to replace Ritchie, it looks like that's who it will be.

Late to the game but boy was that an awful awful game by Lindholm. Bobbling pucks left and right, a normal Lindholm would have had 2G,1A. Get it back next game man!

Oh and also Kylington should get some more 3 on 3 reps ahead of Hanifin as well IMO

Yeah I agree. Not a fan of Hanifin 3 on 3. He played that 2 on 1 really bad. Didn't take the pass or shot.

He's been on the ice for both OT losses.
