At minimum he's a lot closer to the NHL.
And has a higher ceiling.

And ultimately it only matters what Buffalo thinks.
HockeyProspecting.com has both players very close. Granted it's just one model, but here is Zary Vs. Krebs:

Zary:
D-1: 26
D0: 37
D+1: 39
D+2: No data

Star Probabilities: 40% -> 28%
NHLer Probabilities: 65% -> 68%

Krebs:
D-1: 20
D0: 26
D+1: 39
D+2: 44

Star Probabilities: 15% -> 13% -> 10%
NHLer Probabilities: 53% -> 61% -> 72%

Yep, certainly not an easy trade to make as both players would have to know they were being flipped.

What are some examples of this?

Hamilton trade rumors were really non-existent then ramped up in 24-48hrs prior to the deal happening then it wasn’t until it was really close that the Flames were mentioned as the favorite to get him and the deal was done that day.

With Lindholm we heard 2-3 days before the trade the Flames were really interested in him if Carolina couldn’t get a deal done.

What trades that were long rumored did Treliving sneak in and make happen when the Flames were never mentioned?

It is worth mentioning that Friedman also does not say a single thing about which teams are still involved.

In the Hamonic trade I recall thinking that the Flames came in from out of nowhere.

How does Eichel fit in their salary structure? The only thing saving their ass right now is LTIR. They have $22.5M on IR and LTIR right now. Those guys have to comeback at some point, and they're going to count against the cap. How do they fit another $10M to that payroll???

The Flames and Toronto were rumored to be battling it out for him prior to the deal getting done. The deal happened on the Saturday of the draft and the Flames-Leafs battle to get him heated up the previous night.

I feel like since Treliving came in the Flames get linked to any player involved. Flames were also a little late to get mentions in the Eichel rumors it was all Rangers, Wild, Kings, Knights, Ducks and as teams dropped out the Flames started to get mentioned.

I am not sure we should read into it too much. Eichel has dragged out longer than everyone hoped and expected. Buffalo is likely doing what they can to keep the bidding war up

Screw it, let's stop waiting on the one we might not get and instead push that same pile of chips across the table to Toronto for Nylander.

Toronto is struggling and may be convinced change is needed. I believe his cap hit is reasonable ~ 7M ish and if Im not mistaken he is RHS. (would need the insight regulars on the board to confirm on that)

Would Nylander immediately make the Flames better ?

I think the Flames need game breaking talent or might as well keep status quo. Is Nylander a game breaker? I don't think so.

He can be. When he feels like it.

Doubt that the Leafs have any interest in rebuilding packages that have been offered to the Sabres.
If the Leafs want to make a change it would be either Marner or Nylander.
It would start with the Flames sending Tkachuk the other way.

I'd take Nylander here, but he's like a poor man's Gaudreau. Handy to have but price needs to be right.

Dube+Zadorov+a couple of 2nds is probably as far as I'd go

IMO, Nylander is the last player the Leafs should be looking to move - he’s the only one on a decent contract.

Only guy who showed up up in the playoffs for them last year as well.

As this is a thread dedicated to news and thoughts about Jack Eichel, perhaps take your musings about William Nylander to the "2021/2022 Trade Speculation and Rumours" all-purpose thread.

Thanks for that.

I have been looking over the numbers, draft positions, and accomplishments of these guys and based on that, I can't see why Krebs is considered a higher tier than Zary, Coronato, and Pelletier. They are all good prospects who look like they are on the right path. Granted, I haven't seen them enough for the eye test (not sure my eye test means much anyway), but I can't find any specific arguments for why Krebs is better. It seems like it is just something some people said and it became gospel.

I have to wonder if it is a case of "everything Vegas touches turns to gold, and everything the Flames do sucks".

It's partly because we've heard Buffalo wants Krebs and Vegas won't give him up.
We've not heard those same thing about any of the Flames' prospects.
So if one believes that stuff, there is a signal that they value Krebs highly.

I too would take Nylander for a reasonable price.

I'm less interested in Marner at the price his name would command.

The only big ticket name I would disrupt the top 6 for is Eichel.

A couple of additional data points
- Cory Pronman ranks Krebs #66 on his list of top players 23 or under. Coronato is the top Flame at #96. Zary is #115
- Wheeler ranked Krebs #26 on his top prospects. Top Flame was Zary at #44.

I like the Flames prospects but most sources put Krebs ahead. And I think we have to acknowledge that he's generally considered to be a better prospect.

Hypothetically, keeping Dube at centre is to prepare for the movement of Monahan to a second team. And hypothetically, the emergence of Kylington on the second pairing, and readiness of Mackie for the third, opens up the possibility of Valimaki being a movable piece. Hyperkinetically.
