I keep going thru hot an cold on the Eichel front..
Part of me just wants it to happen at all costs but part of me also doesn't want to sacrifice so much of the future + roster pieces to do it...especially when you're not even guaranteed of what post-surgery Eichel looks like.
I personally think Buffalo's ask is insane and 1 piece too many, and while many on here have said that if Tre drops the ball here he's an idiot...if it means gutting our frikin prospect pool + picks + roster players, I'm not so sure man...
If anything the 1st should be protected and they shouldn't even have a sniff at neither of Mange or Dube imo

Monahan might be on the fourth line and super replaceable 5v5 with Richardson
But he’s also on PP1 which looks pretty good, a lot harder to replace that

I just don't know if the salary and risk he walks to FA is a dealbreaker for their management.

Yea, I am really not sure about the add either, I threw in 2 2nds to get the conversation going but I feel like at least with Tkatchuk as the centerpiece they'd have to be intrigued.
I also feel like bringing in Eichel gives Gaudreau a reason to sign long term as well, playing with him has to be appealing long term.
I actually haven't minded Tkatchuks play so far either, he's been noticeable most games.

I’ve seen only a couple good shifts per game out of him, which is not on par with Gaudreau or Lindholm. And he is still a guy who makes low percentage or blind passing plays a lot, which I bet Sutter hates.

Yeah I think he would be part of a package but would have to pay more in picks to mitigate that risk for them.
And lets not forget, if they don't think they can resign him either they can get more assets for him when they deal him.

Mangiapane could mostly replace it, depending on how much you value Monahan's faceoff ability.
TBH I think having a righthanded shot on the PP bumper would be a better fit actually. We use Gaudreau on the left circle primarily because it gives him the short pass option to Monahan. But that's also why our PP lacks onetimers - Gaudreau on the left and Lindholm on the right.
Not saying we have anyone who shoots right on roster who can or should play that role, but maybe it's Coronato or Phillips - both have great shots and a PP-worthy skillset.

Toronto floundering, cap stretched to the max, rumors of unhappiness and friction over stupid things like dress code...
Should we be pitching a huge package for Matthews instead of Eichel?
Mangiapane+Monahan+Valimaki+ next 2 1sts ...

Barf. It would be funny to see how Sutter would handle that guy though.

"Depth wins championships" = true
"High end talent wins championships" = true
What I have felt is that proper slotting really helps overall - having legitimate 1st line talent playing on the 1st line, legitimate 2nd line talent playing on the 2nd line, and so on.
Getting Eichel makes the slotting better. It makes both statements above true. Lindholm is a 1st line talent, but pushing him down to the 2nd line? Backlund is a legitimate 2nd line centre by any metric, but pushing him down to the third line makes it the best third line in the league, IMO. 4th line should still be good - it is solid now, and whatever pieces you have left with Lucic, Richardson, Lewis, Gawdin, Ruzicka, etc., should leave you with at least a competent 4th line, if not a really good one.
Who knows what the package from whatever team ends up looking like when it is all said and done - we can talk about what Treliving should have or shouldn't have offered relative to the package if the Flames 'lose out' on Eichel, and if the Flames 'win the Eichel sweepstakes', then we can discuss how much he might have overpaid or underpaid by.
I hope the Flames get him, but I also hope it is for the least amount of assets possible so that the Flames can not only ice the best team this year, but are able to re-sign Gaudreau, Tkachuk and Mangiapane, and fill the remainder of the holes as cheaply as possible but with proper slotting with the remaining assets like Dube, Zary, etc. (whomever isn't included in the trade).

You know Mangi is playing well when people are scoffing at trading him for Eichel/Matthews

I totally get it too. Mangiapane looks unreal right now. But to land someone like Matthews...

Flames will have some big decisions to make, because I don't see a way they can keep all three of Gaudreau, Tkachuk and Mangiapane beyond this season.
You'd be looking at, I dunno....roughly $20-25 million AAV combined for three left shooting top 6 wingers if they somehow managed to extend them all?

Matthews only has 2 years after this year, then becomes a UFA.
He also managed to make also 12 mill per year on his current contract.
That man is going to make a lot of money in his career.

That's what happens when a kid is putting up a goal per game dating back into last season, mvp'd his nation to a championship, and you still don't even know what his ceiling can be.
