Just watched Dune. Loved it, especially the performances by Chalamet and Rebecca Ferguson (his mother). I thought it had the right mix of epic scale mixed with nuance and world/character building. You feel transported to an authentic world that doesn't seem ridiculous the way a lot of sci fi does when you first encounter the world built. They do a good job of making you care about the characters, even though the first half of the film is a little stiff.
As always with Villeneuve and Zimmer, the aesthetics, costumes, cinematography, and score are top notch, although I felt the score could have been a little more interesting at times.
My wife, who knew literally nothing about this before seeing it, and isn't necessarily a huge sci fi fan, said she enjoyed it quite a bit and is looking forward to the next part.
I give it a 9.5/10.

We need a better theatre in or near downtown. Chinook is a dump and has no recliners, Eau Claire is a dump and has no recliners. Market Mall is fine but not that close, only has 5 screens and parking at the mall near Christmas is a disaster.
It's Calgary. You should know you have to drive for nice things.
Just watched 1917 for the first time. Just incredible. I'm seriously bummed I didn't see it in theater. The tension building was impeccable and obviously the cinematography was brilliant. I love the way they filmed this, probably my second favourite war movie after Dunkirk.

Seton is hardly out of the way.
LOL. That's one of the most baffling things anyone has ever posted here. Not out of the way? I may as well dive to Airdrie, at least that's only 20 minutes away. If you were looking for an "out of the way" place to put something, and still be inside Calgary, Seton would be perfectly located.

I thought 1917 was way better than Dunkirk.
That movie...the way it was shot was just a masterpiece.
Thats like a filmmaker saying: "Hold my beer and watch this..."
Amazing.

If you're willing to go to Market Mall, Sunridge is a good option. More screens, all recliners, and it doesn't share a parking lot with the mall.
I agree that we should have better options downtown. Hopefully the redevelopment of Eau Claire will include an updated theatre. I also think that something on the east side, East Village/Victoria Park/Beltline, would be good and fit into the city's plans to turn that into the Arts & Entertainment district.

I just watched it today. I liked it but it was really slow for the first 45 mins. Easily could have chopped 30 mins off that 2 hours 30 minute movie.
I think 30 is too severe. There was lots of important stuff in that first segment, but if you lost 10-15 minutes, It would have been much tighter.
i think with adaptations, its really tough, as you need to ensure the 'hard core' fans will be satisfied, as they are likely going to be people doing multiple watches...
I've heard some fringe hard core fans dislike the movie because they have left out a lot of information... like the 'Choam' (which, iirc, is essentially the company that stockpiles and distributes the spice to the universe...like The East Indian Trading Company, 10,000 years into the future, and whom the caretakers of Arrakis get to skim money off the top)...
So some hardcore fans are upset because the movie isn't granular enough (did anyone really miss the dinner scene or the conservatory scene?) but the regular movie goer already think its much too long... Its super hard to pass information in a movie... you could do a movie scroll, a la Star Wars to pass on a preface,,,, or you could resort to exposition dumps or internal monologues like Lynch did - skip to 54 second mark
Villeneuve distilled the story to something reasonably close that could be actually be made into a 2hr 40 min movie...but not everyone is going to happy with the result...

Every now and then Cage makes a movie that reminds you how bloody brilliant an actor he is when he wants and gets the right script, Adaption was a superb film

Adaptation was phenomenal for sure....great performances all around, but the screenplay was simply amazing
