They allowed 161 in 56 games last year — a 236-goal pace — and that was before they inexplicably decided to replace Giordano with Gudbranson and Zadorov.
In the last full NHL season, 14 teams allowed more than 250 goals. It's not like I said they'd give up 300 (although I don't think 275 is out of the question).
I'd put 10 bucks on 250 or more, though.

It's my honest take. I can't really see them being any good at all, especially if we don't see Tanev keep up his otherworldly play and Andersson bounce back.

Although I believe with the loss of Giordano the defense isn't as good, I think the forwards are much more defensively sound. You MUST be accountable on the other side of the puck under this coach. I think the overall team defense will be better.
Its Darryl Sutter, he gives up the outer parameter to limit high danger, the problem as you pointed out will be generating offense.

Markstrom + Vladar will have something to say about that.
We got good, healthy Markstrom for only the first couple weeks last season.

At least they can only surpass those expectations.

Are they really unfair, though? We just watched a Flames season where they didn't really commit to any direction and stood pat on the roster during the year, with that choice ultimately leading to them letting their captain and best defenceman walk for nothing and letting Gaudreau's NTC kick in without extending or trading him (reducing their leverage in both situations).
It was a disaster. So ... that's the starting point for my expectations.

If Gaudreau's contract situation affects his on-ice play, it will be in a positive way.
The goaltending will be better.
The team defense will be better.
There is no chance they give up 250 goals.

Pretty explicable … best of a bad set of options for the expansion draft.
Explicable, but still ####ty.

Sutter coached Calgary for its final 30 games last season, starting on March 11. From that point on, the Flames allowed the second-fewest shot attempts per 60 at 5-on-5 and generated the eighth most, per naturalstattrick.com. Their overall shot-attempt share was second in the NHL only to the Colorado Avalanche’s once Sutter took over, and the Flames had the second-lowest expected goals against per 60 at 5-on-5.

Well, they might. I don't see a prime Kiprusoff, Quick, Nabokov, or Doughty on this team.
They really need Tanev to keep playing like an all-star and I'm not sure if that's feasible. Beyond that, it's pretty bleak. I like Markstrom but he still needs to show a lot after his 20-21 season.
I just don't know how you can say the team defence will be better after they lost one of the league's better defencemen. It's possible there's some value to be had with Zadorov — I really don't think there's any chance with Gudbranson — but I don't know if Darryl's system will be able to fill the holes in this defensive group. It's just not very good, and I think there's a chance it'll be the least talented one he's ever coached in the NHL.
And I just question whether Markstrom will be able to succeed with the heavy workload Darryl will undoubtedly give him. The insurance has some upside but still, Vladar and Werner have collectively played seven NHL games.
I suspect this team will have to outscore a lot of its problems, and I just don't know if they have the personnel to do it. That's not me trying to conjure up a hot take ... it's just what I see as being the reality with this roster.

Yeah, no hot takes - you are simply stating, and supporting your opinion.
And I happen to disagree with everything you say.

And cheers to you. Here's to Oliver Kylington breaking out and Rasmus Andersson bouncing back this year.

In fairness I didn't say I think what I said is reality — I said it's what I see as being the reality.
Y'all can believe whatever you want about the Flames, I'm not gonna stop you. All I can do is call it how I see it. Purely opinion, of course.

Yes, no need to get defensive. You have every right to your opinion. And most importantly, you have well thought out reasons to support them. Which is one of the reasons why I enjoy discussing them with you.

That's fair. I am probably a little triggered by all the "reality" being espoused by all those self-appointed "realists" over the summer.

Let me straighten out one thing, Scorp.
You are certainly entitled to your opinion and for the most part I acquiesce with them.
However, taking in to consideration that almost every CP member was certain that coaching was a black hole over recent years...
Perhaps, to be consistent, we should give Sutter the credit for , historically, providing outstanding defensive results, including, after walking into horror shows in San Jose, Calgary (first time) and LA.
That was my point and I stand firm on it.

I just don't see the personnel. All three of those teams had elite goaltenders and, IMO, at least one defenceman who was better than Tanev generally is.
The Flames need Markstrom to rebound after his injuries and Tanev to continue his excellent play, plus a few more things to go their way. If Darryl's the man to fix it, I'll be super impressed.
