My prediction is Friday afternoon, on the eve of the Flames season opener. To the Flames.

Buffalo was reportedly incredibly high on William Eklund before the draft who ended up slipping to the Sharks at 7. If the Sharks put him on the table along with moving Hertl to a third team for futures then I believe the Sharks could certainly have an offer that equals the Flames.
It just doesn’t make any sense to me that they would add Eichel at this stage of their team.

Then they deliver a walloping on the Oilers the next night and Andersson tells their bench to get used to it. Following the game the Flames announce Eichel takes one of Matheson's "sacred" jersey numbers.
CP is deeply aroused.

If the Sharks added Eichel, they would have $44.5 million tied up in 5 players through the 24/25 season. And those 5 players would have a combined age of 163 starting next year. I can't see any reason San Jose does that.

The one aspect of acquiring Eichel that intrigues me the most aside from having an elite #1C is the contract situations of Tkachuk and Gaudreau.
I would think getting the chance to play on a line with Eichel is enticing enough to highly consider staying with the Flames. But the point has been made we could probably only keep one of them, and hopefully we can get a hefty return for the other.
For arguments sake if the Flames spent 1st Round Pick x 5 to get Eichel, a hefty return for Gaudreau or Tkachuk would net less but still recoup at least 3/5 of those 1sts IMO.
It is an interesting position the Flames would be in where they could potentially do some damage with a studded top 6, and still have some younger assets down the pipeline.

If Eichel wants any chance of playing in the Olympics, a deal has to be done ASAP. Like his agent said, every day this doesn’t get done is a day lost.
Seems like the right timing too with the Flames not playing until Saturday, and Buffalo now letting interested teams view his medical records and are willing to make a part of the deal conditional.

Regardless of the acquisition cost, it will make sense around here if it happens.

I doubt the Flames trade either in the middle of the season. Not when they are trying to make the playoffs. Johnny either signs an extension or is lost to UFA IMO. There would be time to trade a Tkachuk though.

Historically speaking, Treliving has never been one to put much weight on soft deadlines. I think the Olympics would fall into that category.

I would imagine that the Olympics are the last thing Buffalo is concerned about.

No, but the agent has to be hounding them about it and at this point the two parties know it’s over. They should just trade him to The Flames already and allow everyone to move on

He’s 27…. Turns 28 in a month.
They have nothing of interest to Buffalo in an Eichel deal.

I think he means Hertl is no different of an asset than Monahan who just turned 27 and many of us see him as the salary going the other way. Hertl could be flipped to a 3rd team just like Monahan but he has even more trade protection.
I do think Eklund is a better asset for the Sabres than anything the Flames have. I just don’t think Eichel turns the Sharks around and they are just buried in bad deals

However; Eichel is another US born player who happens to be an elite 1C.
I know he is also very tight with Hanafin. This would hopefully entice those other two to re-sign and possibly even take a little bit less than they could potentially fetch on the open market.
It’s all moot and all we can do is speculate, but it’s nice to dream sometimes

Where is this strong feel Gaudreau is going to at least test free agency coming from? Everything from legit sources states otherwise.

Just due to the fact that this is his last chance most likely at a huge pay day, and if the Flames fall flat this year, why wouldn’t he test the market? I would.
He could always see what’s out there and then circle back to the Flames.
A lot can happen this season to sway his decision one way or another. I think if his and the managements mind was 100% made up on this, he would have a new contract signed already

If he wanted to test free agency his agent would not have told LeBraun that talks will continue during the season and both parties want to get a deal done. Almost always when a player wants to go to UFA those talks stop.

Gaudreau may end up leaving for a variety of reasons, but I think Francis had him literally 100% wrong.
Seems like he and his whole family value loyalty to a very high degree.
Honestly think it's his preference to stay.
