It’s time the NHL made players responsible for moving at a speed at which they can control their movement when heading toward another player, in the same way that they are responsible for controlling their sticks.
Moving at a speed which they can control. So can we control a bad edge the same way?

It's a lose/lose situation basically in a lot of ways.

It's a flat out reckless play by McDavid to drive towards the goalie as fast as possible and expect not to be touched. At that speed even a small amount of contact could send him crashing dangerously into the goalie, net, or boards.

Very similar to:

Ideally he doesn't get tripped in either play, but to me it's a dangerous play by McDavid and should draw some goalie interference calls like in this clip. At the same time, he's going to get tripped by defencemen too as they attempt to defend such a difficult play, but the resulting collision is almost always going to be dangerous.

Jonathan Quick pounded a guy for doing the exact same thing and running into him tonight

If McAvi doesn't learn something from Sid in the next Olympics the whole NHL as we know it is in trouble and we will have no choice either to watch or to discard.

Trip or no trip, he is smashing into Markstrom there.

One of these times he is going to seriously injure himself and/or another player. I hope it isn't against the Flames for we all know the blame will be put on the other player for prematurely ending the career of a superstar. It is reckless and idiotic.

It is not the first time and it won’t be the last that he recklessly runs through a goalie.

I don’t think Darryl would have been happy with the Flames’ response on that.

I would anticipate that if he does it again to the Flames, he may receive more discouragement than a minor penalty

He only "runs" the goalie because Tanev clips his feet and he falls into him. He easily skates by if that doesn't happen. Right to defend or not, the blame for running the goalie falls 100% on Tanev.

Funnily enough Rhett mentioned on the radio this morning that a similar play happaned that he knocked a guy into turek(?) and got turek hurt which lead to the trade for kipper.

Honestly, I don't know what to say about the tripping or interference, he comes in so fast, as others have mentioned, any legitimate attempt at defending him is going to end up in what we see time and time again. I don't play hockey and obviously it's easy for a keyboard warrior like me to say it, but if I can't use my stick/position against him, I'd be looking to line him up for a massive bodycheck as he's coming across. But since it's never happened, maybe it's just not a feasible play but I won't stop hoping to see it.

Tanev tripped him. I'm not going to argue that. Was it intentional or their skates colliding I honestly don't know.

But I think what people are saying is that McDavid puts everyone including himself in a very scary position by driving that way. It's allowed. It's legal. But with that much speed he is the weapon, not the defender cutting him down.

You're allowed to trip players in hockey. It's a two minute minor. We've heard of "good penalties" for years for tripping a guy that might have had a breakaway.

This isn't any different, but McDavid is making it dangerous for himself and goaltenders because he leaves no room for anything else to happen.

Yeah, the only way McLoser "easily skates by" is if he has a clear path to the net. Most of the time he does not, and one would hope that he has the situational awareness to realise that this is probably going to result in a high speed collision. I don't have much of a problem with the penalty call, because this is within the rules. What I have a serious problem with is this entitled, whining loser who has never accomplished anything remotely impressive in the NHL bitching about opposing players doing their jobs. McIdiot would do well to just keep his mouth shut.

^ exactly. Agree with both posts above. He is willing to put himself and the goaltender at risk with his recklessness

There is going to be a defender trying to stick on puck or trying to block his path. He is willing to accept that risk

He should stop yelling when it doesn’t go his way

It’s a career shortening move for him too… I really don’t understand how he continues to do it so recklessly. He broke his collar bone already from it… He has the skill to be effective without having to retire at 29 due to multiple high speed impacts with goalies, nets, and end boards.

Plus, a very serious knee injury in 2019. It was the last game of the season, so he didn't miss any games, but it would otherwise have been a season ender.

He's six seasons into his career and he has already suffered 2 significant injuries from similar plays. He also puts the goalie at significant risk of injury on that type of play as well.

LOL

If McDavid doesn't drive to the net, he doesn't run into Markstrom. Period.

Therefore it is not 100% on Tanev.

Think about this from the perspective of a different player - imagine that it is Matthews charging the net like that. If the player does that, they are responsible for the consequences. The other team is not going to simply let them go unimpeded.

And there are going to be consequences. If I were an Oiler fan, I would be very worried about McDavid doing that. You can blame the other player, and call it tripping, all you want. That won't help him much, the next time he gets injured.

"if only he were allowed to drive to the net unimpeded, then nobody would get hurt"

I try not to wish for bad things to happen the players I hate, but stuff like this makes it real difficult, especially when I hear it both on fan forums and in the media.

At what point does it become the defensemen's ice to defend? What exactly should Tanev to do it that situation? McDavid is the player cutting across the middle of the ice surface (into Tanev) at a high rate of speed. Tanev has his stick and leg down as defensemen are taught and told to do in order to deter a potential cross crease pass.
