I think what you’ve highlighted with BT this year is precisely the problem. The franchise is at a crossroads (IMO) and you have a lame duck GM fighting for his job, with moves that satisfy the win or get fired mandate, but fall well short of strategic moves for the good of the organization in the long run.
With two franchise altering departures potentially on the horizon in Johnny and Tkachuk, I hope there’s more being considered than if this team plays in May or not.

I don't know how anyone can talk themselves into thinking they know how this process is going. We can speculate until Sutter's cows come home but we don't know anything. They could be far apart, they could be close. The only thing we know is that the player indicates he wants to stay, the team has said they are in current negotiations with the players agent, and that the optimal time to trade him has passed by. To me those signs indicate it is likely the player and the team have intent to get a deal done in Calgary, but that is my speculation.

Lame duck in the sense that it's unclear if he's part of the picture if the team misses the playoffs, and doesn't seem to have the same autonomy to make decisions he once did.

He has to have complete autonomy, or the Gudbranson wouldn't happen if any sort of sanity check was made.

Has even one poster indicated that this is going well for the Flames?

Anyone know what the last thing Treliving has said publically about contract negotiations?

Not a single person has claimed that it is 'going well'. So your comment is empty.
More importantly, it misses the point altogether. The only thing that matters is whether or not it get done, or what, if something else, transpires. And until that happens, the only thing worth worrying about is whether it is going poorly.
Now, some people feel that they can read the tea leaves and conclude that it is in fact going poorly. Others (and I am in this camp), think that we don't know, and that those people that think they know are full of ####.

Players always insist they want to stay when contracts are coming up, so I don't put any weight on that. Also, you can still speculate easily what is more likely, and in this case (without hating the Flames or being pessimistic or whatever people are claiming these days) it appears more likely that the player will test free agency.
I don't understand the butthurt about predicting that, I mean just look at it from the players perspective for a couple of minutes instead of from a Flames fan's perceptive.
What is the incentive to sign a deal late in this season with the Flames vs waiting a couple months and seeing what the entire league has to offer. Of course that should be the frontrunner if you were putting money on it.

The Flames needed to make a decision on Johnny earlier to be in the driver's seat, now they are not in the driver's seat, Johnny is. That's not some anti-Flames pessimism, it's just reality.

I imagine the number right now is around $9-9.5 million from gaudreau’s camp and flames management might be trying to get him down to $8-8.5 million. But if he goes flying out of the gate to start the season and if he’s not signed by December… I think the price will could rise to $10 million per year by then. Treliving could come to them offering $9 million by then but Gaudreau‘s camp could look at it as the flames took the gamble to wait and now they’d have to pay for it since he is lighting up the league in a contract year… and by then he’ll be even closer to free agency with plenty of suitors after a huge season.
I know it was just a preseason game but Johnny was in god-mode tonight. If he keeps that up in the regular season this team will be a real force in the West… and the cost for Treliving to get him signed will be scary high.

But that's thing, I can't see a scenario where Treviling wants to sign him and is just waiting too long. Gaudreau had a down year, this would be a great time to sign a long term contract if you believe in the player.
But it's the stupidest time in the world for Johnny to sign a deal. a) sign with one team after a subpar season (by his standards) or b) do the best you can, up your stats this season and sign with the highest bitter/closer to home for more money than a Flames offer.
I mean, I know where my money is on that bet. Again, not being pessimistic or angry or anything, I want the Flames to win the Cup again, but just looking at what appears to be most realistic.

In fairness maybe they tried really hard but at the end of the day it's still Johnny's decision. This is one of the biggest decisions of his life. It would probably be smart to at least see what other options are available to him. If Calgary was an ideal situation like Tampa I bet the deal would have been done already but it's far from that so I'd guess he at least tests free agency.

I wouldn't expect Gaudreau to have a monster season.
Who has ever had a career year under Sutter besides goalies?
His teams win but they don't score a lot.

When has Sutter ever had an offensive player like Gaudreau? A 99 point player.
Gaudreau had a pretty good stretch under Sutter last season, don't see why that can't continue.

He also was very fortunate with a 18% shooting percentage. Toffoli would be lucky to score 28 goals all of this year.

I think you’re wrong on this. Obviously time will tell but with the beef the flames have brought into the lineup I think Gaudreau is going to have more time and space then he’s ever had in his time with the Flames. If they can have a hot start I think sky is the limit for Gaudreau who’s no doubt going to be motivated being in a contract year.

Nicholls, Amonte, Roenick - Chicago
Iginla
Kopitar in LA
He didn't have much scoring in SJ, but still had players like Nolan, Marleau and Selanne at the end.
These players all had good seasons under him but I think it's a fair point that Sutter isn't likely to create a positive outlier season for a point producer.
Kopitar and Iginla for example had their best offensive seasons, stats wise, under different coaches. Although Roenick had his career high in points playing for Darryl a long time ago.
