I believe he'd be happy to stay, but I'd also bet he's not willing to give any sort of discount. If the flames want him, they're going to have to pay full market value, whatever that is.
I feel that whenever fans say they want a player to sign a fair deal, they mean they want the player to sign one that's fair to the team and below what they could get as a UFA.
If they get a deal done, I'd guess 8 years, 8.5M per, with a NMC for the first 5 years, and a limited NTC clause for the last 3.

Posters are saying that Johnny wants to stay. I believe that he is willing to stay under the right contract. That's not necessarily eager to move teams.
I think those players would stay with their teams if the price is right. Not eager to move, but willing to move, if they don't get the contract they require. Barkov might actually want out. His value is through the roof.

It blows my mind there is a Goodrow and Gaudreau in the league at the same time.
Simply amazing.

You said that if he truly wanted to stay here he would be signed already.
I’m just pointing out that isn’t a fair comment

No wonder things are not progressing Gaudreau's agent is talking to a tree.

Vancouver's two best players aren't even in camp but I was told that is a "non story" in the other thread

I disagree.
Truly wants to stay means it’s his preferred destination, and presumably a player accepts less to be in his preferred destination. If that was the case, he would be signed.
I believe Calgary is an acceptable destination if the price is right.
Big difference.

How could you possibly know that though? The guy had some of the equipment staff at his wedding.
These negotiations don’t happen overnight. Landeskog wasn’t signed until the day before free agency despite wanting to stay in Colorado.
Of course his agent is going to use whatever leverage he can (including time) to get the best deal possible for his client. He’s paid a ton of money to do exactly that.
The fact he isn’t signed yet says nothing about his intentions or desires.

Landeskog desperately wanted to stay in Colorado and they knew it. So they lowballed right to the end. They eventually went up to $7M.
His situation is nothing like Johnny.

I think there is a very good chance Johnny re-signs as long as Tre doesn’t completely #### it up. Just my personal view, my sense based on observing the player, what he says, his family, values, behaviour etc. I have seen pretty much nothing in the way of duplicity
Sometimes things are actually as simple as they look. There is no good reason for the player to sign a year early off a down year, and there doesn’t have to be some ulterior motive or master scheme otherwise

There is the really good reason of taking out the chance of a career ending injury leaving you with nowt instead $60M in the bank.

Players can take out insurance to some extent.
But in reality, players take this risk all the time, otherwise players would not reach UFA status.
I think that’s the reason you see players sign longer term first contracts that eat up some UFA’s years. They get their lifetime security money. Then they are free to gamble when they get close to UFA, as they already have lifetime security.
And not too many players get that career ending injury. It’s rare, I am trying to think of a current example?

It's not just a career ending injury. It's having bad years and missing out on some pretty big paydays. Doesn't happen to most but my mind goes to Hall turning down I think it was an 8 x 8 from Arizona. And the big one that comes to mind is Thomas Vanek turning down 7 year 50m from the Islanders only to end up with yearly low contracts.
I'd take the money, too much risk on the line.

Ha? How was Landeskog offered more by other teams when he didn't even make it to UFA.

I think (me, not someone else) that this habit some people have of acting like they're in the minds of these other people, especially those with entirely different lives and circumstances, is entirely silly.
If NHL star players think differently than you (assuming we know at least that much is true) then it would follow that any claims you make about what they thought or are thinking is totally pointless nonsense.
