Get the team settled, focused on nothing but hockey, and ready to win on opening night. Been saying this for a couple months now. Not something new.

One thing I will say about the Treliving boosters, they are consistent as hell at trying to distract you from the absolute crap job the guy does, and the trajectory the team is on. Keep it up guys. Brad Treliving thanks you for your support, as do all the other teams in our division.

What is being done to distract?

Why is it that I'm perfectly fine with those that want Treliving gone, but if anyone disagrees they have to be on the payroll (astro turfing was the lastest) or purposely trying to sway the conversation through deceit?

How can it be a bad thing to simply provide a list of five teams he would like to play for?

It's never a bad thing. Never. If he's motivated to move, he can let the Flames know that fact, and they can explore a trade. But to the extent that he wants to decide where he can be moved to, he has that option.

If he provided a list of 5 teams that have no interest in paying a bunch of futures for a rental, it effectively gives him complete no trade protection.

If he puts his 5 most desirable places, he doesn't get to choose. Plus those 5 could change dramatically over the season. Why wouldn't a player rather have complete control over where they could be trade too?

Otherwise, why wouldn't players negotiate a 5 Can be Traded to List instead of a complete NTC? The answer is obvious a complete NTC is better in all circumstances. Johnny can always, if he wants, expand the list at any time to include desirable teams.

Which may or may not be relevant.

Johnny is entitled to ask for whatever he wants from Calgary. He has complete control at this stage. If they don't meet his asking price (regardless if he's worth it or not), he can walk as a UFA. They may not even be able to trade him without his consent.

I assume if Johnny would sign a FMV deal he'd be signed by now. He's probably looking for a mega deal to keep him in Calgary. Something like 8x $9.5M as a minimum. And maybe more.

		 |

Of course he is entitled to ask for whatever he wants. That's every players right. What information is available to indicate that he would hold this team over the barrel? If Johhny truly wants to stay here I am sure he is more than willing to negotiate in good faith. He's not a 9.5M dollar player today, and certainly wont be when he is 34-37 years old.

Gaudreau is probably worth 9 over a lengthier contract, 9.5-10 over a shorter term in this current market.

If he has another 100 point season he could boost that, but I'd expect he again slots in around 70 points over 82.

(Although if he is kept with Lindy and Tkachuk all season, I could see a PPG easily)

If he truly wanted to stay here and was going to negotiate in good faith (as you call it, meaning his true FMV), he'd be signed already .

I expect he's willing to stay with a massive overpay. But I doubt Calgary is not his preferred destination, but an acceptable one if the price is right. Like many UFA's they have different price points with various markets.

I don't like the term "in good faith". It makes it sound like they are doing something devious or wrong.

I think it's quite possible that all the players you listed are going to use time to their advantage to leverage as much as possible, and could be willing to go to free agency if it comes to that.

You could take it to mean this, or you could take it to mean that just as in contract negotiations with Backlund and Andersson Treliving and Gaudreau's agent continue working toward getting a deal done mid-season.

Sure, except Rasmus was rfa so no worries of him leaving and Backlund is nowhere near the star Gaudreau is and wouldn't cripple the team if he left for peanuts. I'd bet management knew that Backlund wanted to stay here as well. Unknown on Johnny's thoughts. Kinda apples to oranges.

Aside from the fact that he has stated multiple times that he wants to stay. And no, he doesn't have to say that - lots of players will dodge the question, or give generic answers. Based on the available evidence, I think a deal gets done.
