He's probably just desperately clinging onto anything he can as ammo since everyone seems to bust his balls about how terrible the Coyotes are as an organization.

Treliving had one major thing to keep front and center this off-season. Eliminate distractions and kill and drama surrounding the team. Did he do that? Nope. Amped it up actually. The guy should have been sent packing garbage bag day.

Yeah we gotta get him on the phone and let him know he’s fired because he didn’t do the one thing Lanny on CP set as his summer goal on Sep 22.

I don't believe that this is how most players see things. The majority of those playing on middling teams like the Flanes are probably convinced that they can win it all with the group they have. Players re-sign to stay on playoff bubble teams all the time; Calgary is not suddenly this weird exception with every player clamoring to leave.

Do you think Treliving has done a good job this off-season?

What's the market for Johnny? I'd be interested in a trade for the Flames.

Do you think the off-season can be judged before any games are played?
I don't get that.

Yeah I do. It happens all the time everywhere and every year. That’s why there are season predictions threads, magazines, etc.

I think at this point, you hold onto him at the trade deadline, and if you haven't signed him, you explore the market then (playoff position or not, imo).

Aahhh, an optimist. Sinking ship? This organization is past the sinking stage of the voyage, the only questions are how hard it will hit the bottom and will anything other than the rats and cockroaches survive this nautical disaster...

Depends on his 5 team Can Trade List. If he and his agent are smart, they put 5 teams on the list who would have no interest in giving up assets for a 1 year rental.
Which effectively gives him a full NTC.
I expect Calgary will run with Johnny as long as they are contending for a playoff spot. Which is likely considering the division they are in.
I expect Flames ownership’s plan is to try and win with this core for one more year. If Johnny leaves, then they would trade Tkachuk and go full rebuild.

I'm not denying there is an industry around it. These magazines and website want to sell their products.
I just think it is pointless. There is no viable metric to measure off-season success. It is an exercise in speculation and emotion.
I'm not suggesting we shouldn't discuss it or have opinions about it, but to simply declare it a failure before any hockey is played seems bizarre. If the Flames end up having a good season is the off-season still a failure?

Which would be brutal asset management. If you let Gaudreau get to this point you better be damn sure you can re-sign him, losing him for nothing is a nightmare.

From that perspective, Treliving can do no wrong in the off season until the season is done.
If we are just looking at results, why is Treliving still here again?

I would do 8.5 X 6 for Gaudreau I think that is a fair value for both sides.
I think from Johnny's perspective he has tend to put up his biggest numbers under perceived "non-player" coach's, and his agent has to be thinking he can get even more dollars, which is scary to think.
From the Flames, you are unsure what the future holds, to many questions on previous years performances. Calgary is really not in a good position, as if Gaudreau goes out and gets back to 99 points, he is going to want top dollar (10m) and the Flames are likely in the playoffs at trade deadline. If he has less than a point per game season the Flames might on the outside looking in. his overall value of the contract might look poor (assuming he signed) and questions might arise why would we keep going with this core. Also the trade deadline value would be diminished (assuming not signed) if he is struggling as he really isn't known for being a great playoff performer.

Actually, I stated this was the primary goal for Treliving shortly after the season ended and people were identifying the challenges facing the team over the off season. I gave a laundry list of things Treliving needed to get done, and by when, and the most important thing was to set the team up for success coming out of the gate. No drama and no distractions. Get the team settled, focused on nothing but hockey, and ready to win on opening night. Been saying this for a couple months now. Not something new.
One thing I will say about the Treliving boosters, they are consistent as hell at trying to distract you from the absolute crap job the guy does, and the trajectory the team is on. Keep it up guys. Brad Treliving thanks you for your support, as do all the other teams in our division.

Kaprizov's contract pretty well makes that contract impossible. The Wild may have just reset the market. 5x$9M for a 51 point player? Gaudreau has an easy starting place for negotiating a big contract.

No it doesn't. There are other comparable players to Johnny's stats that have signed deals recently for less. Kaprizov had the Wild by the balls because of the KHL threat, totally different situations.
