So many people don't get this. Farkas could potentially win the mayoral race with less than 30% of the vote, especially if Davison can pick up steam in the final stretch.
Jeff Davison deciding to run for mayor has to be one of the most curious political moves I've seen. The guy was a lock to get re-elected in his ward. He was largely responsible for the new hockey arena being built. Somehow Ward Sutherland dropped out of his race as well to help with Davison's campaign. With all this, he's still in single digits. It just makes no sense.

No, those businesses can continue to operate...
This makes it required for all "eligible" businesses in the city to require proof of vaccination/recent negative test/medical exemption letter. It isn't optional like at the provincial level.
|
I'm curious because of the wording. So let's say a Dominos Pizza that has no dining room or lounge would only offer delivery or take-out by design doesn't have to, whereas say a Boston Pizza that has a lounge and dining room as well as delivery and takeout has to implement? Or if they close their dining room and lounge, they can operate as a take-out and delivery operation only? Because then I don't see how this does anything except allow enforcement by city and bylaw officials.

I suppose it is a moot point as that referendum is not enforceable. But correct me if I'm wrong.

Jason Kenney is selling the idea that the federal government will be obligated to enter "good faith negotiations" with the province should the referendum be carried by a majority of voters. This is the same guy who blew an unknown amount of money on a pipeline that will never get built and told us that he could sue the US federal government to recoup the losses.

Basically my new voting philosophy is vote the opposite of what Kenney wants on anything.

What it does is
1. allow peace officers to enforce the bylaw
2. gives an excuse for businesses that are getting hassled for signing on to the REP because there actually isn't a choice, and
3. eliminate the arguments from the unvaxxed that they can sit on the patio
so it's great.

Relevant to the thread: current councillor and mayoral candidate Jeff Davison spoke about his 6-year-old daughter having her surgery delayed because of reduced hospital capacity:
Quote:
During a heated city council debate Wednesday, the Ward 6 councillor said his family received a notice from Alberta Health Services last week that their six-year-old daughter’s kidney surgery would be delayed.
“Anyone who thinks that this is a joke, that we should continue to not think about the outcomes, that our hospital system can handle it: wake up, wake up,” he said.
Davison made the remarks at a special meeting where council passed a vaccine passport bylaw that will require certain businesses and facilities to ask patrons for proof of COVID-19 vaccination, closing loopholes left under provincial rules.
Council voted 13-1 to pass the bylaw which comes into force Thursday. Coun. Jeromy Farkas was the lone dissenting vote and his arguments against the bylaw provoked a passionate rebuke from Davison Wednesday.

As a new homeowner in Calgary, what do you do when a ward candidate puts a sign up in your yard without permission? Do I just toss it in the recycling?

If it can be recycled, sure. Otherwise it has to go in the black bin.

Ask one of the other candidates you don’t like to get rid of it for you. Take video of them taking the sign of your lawn. Kill two birds with one stone.

Serious question: does anyone thing that signs are useful for candidates?
Personally, I think that a few signs in a neighbourhood show that a candidate has some support and therefore isn't a fringe Larry Heather type. But there is no difference between 2 and 20 signs. Campaigns at every level seem to be wasting effort and money trying to get their signs out when they could be doing something valuable. It's so weird to me.

That is exactly what I did the last time a UCP did that to me. It stayed on my lawn for less than a day.

I think that signs on private property are useful. If I put one on my lawn and my neighbours know me, it could help them consider that person. The signs on public property are of limited value. Probably useful for someone like Zane Novak (who is running for mayor and I'd never heard of until he put a bunch of signs up near me), but pointless after putting up 20-30 signs down a road.

When I was running that was my philosophy. People hate signs; I wish they weren’t necessary. Attend a forum and talk to the candidates, then vote based on those.

I was thinking about this yesterday on the drive home. I never paid any attention to them for federal or provincial elections because there are so few candidates and it's easy to remember who's who. But for civic elections where there are many more candidates and many more positions (mayor, councilor, school board) there may be some value in signs for the candidate just for name recognition at the ballot box.
Also on the topic of signs I have seen Davidson and Farkas signs popping up in Tuscany recently. I honestly can say I have not seen a Gondek sign in Tuscany or anywhere else along my commute for that matter.

Come on, cut him some slack. He only stole a bit, and then lied about it. He could have stolen way more, but he is too loyal to the taxpayers to do that....
