You can't allocate your money to the fourth line like that. Even if they are effective they don't get the ice time to show it.
Flames haven't had a fourth liner as effective as Hathaway in 20 plus years. You pay him what Washington paid him if that what it takes IMO. Hathaway was playing 10-12 minutes a night and never took a night off. He was really effective and Washington saw that and is now a fan favorite there and plays his role perfectly.

The reporting says he wanted to be out east. I don't know what salary would have convinced him to stay. $1.5M is a pretty big hit for that role.

Would anyone reconsider their rankings after watching these two games?

I think Duer could be a good option for 4th/3rd line in the very near future. Zary and/or Pelletier could make Dube expendable as a piece in a trade if it came down to it. Definitely see Pospisil next season.

After two games? Not really. Nikolaev hasn't really been seen since he just came over this year. Made a very nice first impression. Should that bump him up after one game played? I don't know.

Voted rankings are just fun things and can't really be taken seriously. Neat to look back on a few years down the line though.

I think I voted on him 5 rounds straight. But who knows, this year it seemed like everyone from about 10 to 25 could have been interchangeable.

On a few, sure. But it is only 2 games, and there is a huge disparity in age and experience with these kids. One of the Oilers was 26, and several have played pro hockey for multiple years.. Some of the guys are 19 and have only played junior.

So each player has to be judged on their own progression.

Having said all that, and keeping all of it in mind, then sure, it is fair to re-evaluate some of the players.

Pelletier showed me exactly what I have seen from him in the past, and exactly what expected. Conversely, I thought little of Pospicil before these games, but he showed me that he has more game than I thought. I had zero information on Duehr, so his game was a pleasant eye-opener for me.

So there's a couple that I would change.

I would like to see how they handle regular camp among day to day NHLers first.

Agree with this completely.

To add to this, Hathaway was very inconsistent with his efforts until finally breaking through in his last season in Calgary. Tough situation for Calgary to be in when Washington offers Hathaway a 4 year deal - do you bank that Hathaway is that effective player shown in his last year, or was he just playing hard for his next contract, and would return to his prior self? 4 years at (like I agree with your opinion) at twice the value of a 4th liner is a bigger bet than I would have been comfortable with personally as well, and have had no issues at all in having him leave.

Tyler Pitlick is at least as good as Hathaway

neither player will make or break the Flames
