That's not what they are saying. They are hoping to see water return to a dry section of the Salt River, a section intentionally kept dry by the water management districts. With them creating a new entertainment district, they are hoping they will see an expansion of the wet zone, much like what is at the "lake" district for downtown Tempe and ASU.

With the Colorado watershed in difficulty, and water rationing being in the cards for the southwestern states, it is unlikely that this would happen, at lease for the next two to three years. I could see Tempe lobbying for the waterfront to be expanded, but it just doesn't seem likely with the current state of water politics in the SW.

They would just need to open the dam at Roosevelt Lake to get down to Tempe. Doesn't have much to do with the Colorado. But I'm not an expert!

Roosevelt is part of the Lower Colorado River Basin. So yeah, it has everything to do with it. And no, it isn't as easy as just opening the dam. They have water resources to manage and filling a lake for a real estate development is hardly a wise plan when Arizona is facing water shortages for the next three years. When they are turning off the taps for agriculture, a lake near a shopping district is going to be a very hard sell to not only the Bureau of Reclamation, but tax payers, and people who need water.

They did that because the dam used to create the lake was on the verge of failure. Cleaning up the bottom was just a benefit of the process. There is a reason why there are many organizations who want to see Tempe Town Lake disappear for ever. It seems odd to have this high end arena and no permanent tenant in it. Were they losing money trying to prop up the team or something?

Because nobody cares about the Coyotes, and they took up 41+ dates a year that could’ve been better allocated to anything else.

I don’t see this being make or break to anything but more of a, sure that would be nice!

I pass by this location daily on the way into downtown Phoenix and the overall architecture definitely fits in with the rest of the lakefront.

I still think this is very unlikely and I don’t have a lot of hope because, Coyotes…. But this ownership group is doing this right so far, along with pretty much everything else team related.

Why are people butthurt about posts like this? CP is a Flames board but has ALWAYS covered the NHL as a whole. Considering The Flames are mid arena plans seeing another plan in the league may be applicable right?

I wonder if having the arena unavailable for 40+ nights a year was locking them out of other better options (concerts etc.).

That was the issue with the Aeros in Houston. The owner of the arena was sick of having prime weekend dates booked by a tenant who wasn't paying top dollar, even though it was giving them some occupancy.
