That's crazy. But yeah we may still work out a trade at some point I guess. The return will diminish as time goes by in the season. There's only five teams we can trade him to at that point.

When have the Flames ever lost a star player for nothing? an actual star in his prime

The Francis koolaid? I haven't followed him in years, is that his prognosis? I guess I hope I'm wrong and a trade is worked out soon. To be honest I much prefer that to a new Gaudreau contact anyways.
If it's reasonable it could be alright, but I don't want a $9+mil AAV Gadureau for 8 years, which is likley around where his contract will land for whatever team signs him.

Gaudreau is not getting 9+M for 8 years from anyone. I have not heard anyone speculate that number in the media. I have heard 8M over 6 years. Gaudreau doesn't take much body abuse either, he should age well no matter what the term. You also are not going to get any kind of impact player back in a JG trade at this point and he is the guy who stirs the offence here so if the Flames trade him they might as well go full rebuild which they clearly are not. It will get done and it will get done here. The team wants to try and contend, the player has made it very clear he wants to stay, it will get done.

Where have you heard 6 years at $8mil? I'd probably be comfortable with that as opposed to max years at a million or so more. I can't really see it, mind you, with a free agent biding war on his table next summer, but I'd like it if that were true.

His average points are 77.9 per year so around 7.5-8M seems like the going rate

Do Ben Hanowski, Kenny Agostino and Morgan Klimchuk count as more than nothing?

Pretty sure you know the difference. Not a great trade as it turned out for sure, but Iginla didn't walk. He fetched a first rounder and two B prospects.
And Brodie is an example in a vacuum, but it occurred the same week that they secured a star goaltender and a defenseman that is basically his equivalent.

Yeah but if you want to go that far, the question is irrelevant to Johnny anyway
It’s going to come down on whether they are willing to pay to keep him. I don’t think Johnny is going to take another discount and there may not be a market to trade him for fair value

I don't consider a career 91% goalie to be a "star goaltender" but that's besides the point.
I think the Flames bought out Martin St. Louis and lost him for nothing. Housley was lost via waivers. Loob technically left for nothing.
Michael Cammalleri walked for nothing after having 39 goals and 82 points during is 26 year old season.

Yeah I know, but if I jokingly asked if a second rounder and Emil Heineman counted as more than nothing, somebody would have exploded
Still could happen. But I wasn’t serious.

Yeah I'm iffy on "star goaltender" too ... but then I'm also iffy on Brodie being a star in his prime as well.

Pretty ridiculous to get all over people concerned about the Gaudreau situation. More than enough reason for some raised eyebrows at this point about the Flames off-season and the Gaudreau conundrum for sure. Obviously waiting until Gaudreau controls the 5 teams he can be traded to is sub-optimal and I don’t really see how that’s a debatable point and the people that do sound basically extreme in their bias / fandom. Which of course is fine it’s just void of strategic logic.

Didn't we do a poll on the All time flames roster and Brodie made the lineup? IDK who qualifies as a "star player". Dig out that poll and see how many of those players were traded for compensation.
Would you count Gilmour? Team would have been better off letting him walk away for nothing.
Anyway stars don't get traded at their max value very often, so it's a fantasy IMO. I've never lost a moment's sleep over the team trading Iginla too late for example.

None of the current Flames would come close to the all time team
Of the recent players, only Gio would be on it.
Brodie is not a star but he is as good as most of the current players

IIRC a majority of CP would disagree with you.
Macinnis
Reinhart
Suter
Sarge
Gio
Brodie
were the all time Flames defensemen from the poll. I'm sure there was another, who am I forgetting?
Macinnis left as a FA.
Reinhart traded.
Suter traded
Sarge traded
Gio left in expansion
Brodie left as FA.

Looks like:
Gary Roberts - Joe Nieuwendyk - Jarome Iginla
Johnny Gaudreau - Doug Gilmour - Theo Fleury
Matthew Tkachuk - Sean Monahan - Lanny McDonald
Alex Tanguay - Joel Otto - Joe Mullen
Hakan Loob - Kent Nilsson
Al MacInnis - Mark Giordano
Gary Suter - Robyn Regehr
Paul Reinhart - Sarge
D7
From here:
https://forum.calgarypuck.com/showth...light=All+time
And then Brodie edged out Dion for #7.

Regehr. How could I forget?
You look at that trade and could conclude we paid Buffalo to take him. Worse than losing for nothing.
