How so? He knows the Canes want him, they tried trading for him. the bigger ego move is to match just so the player and the Canes don't get what they want. If they don't match, I imagine once an extension is announced it'll be at a much better AAV and another FU to the Canadians.

His qualifying offer next summer will be $6.1M, I believe, otherwise he walks as a UFA.

So it’s unlikely any extension is at a much better AAV.

Think that is irrelevant if he signs a long term deal.

Maybe...I am more surprised the agent let this fly with the $20 signing bonus. Zero benefit to his client

Yes, and he'll always be KK. Should we be referring to another person as KK when those aren't even his initials?

If you want to call someone stupid, aim it at the posters who are getting Jesperi Kotkaniemi's name wrong.

I totally get what you're saying, I just bet the agent looked at it like it's not their problem. His client just got offered more than he's worth, take it and run

Fair point, but it was the flippant delivery that got to me. I can't speak for others.

The offer sheet is not terrible at all.

1. It's only 1 year. Even if he is replacement level , at most you waste 6M. Looking at SJones, etc, you are wasting a lot more money.

2. After the deal, he is your RFA and can be signed for a reasonable contract on the future. Even with the qualifying offer caveat, RFA rights for a 22 yr old top 3 pick has a ton of value.

Most offer sheets to end to be huge multiyear contracts that go to UFA. This offer sheet is very shrewd and effective.

People keep saying he can be signed to a reasonable multi-year contract after his 1-year is up. But with a very large QO, that is not guaranteed.

Not guaranteed, but reading between the lines it sounds like there is a deal in place or a framework that the team and player and agent are comfortable with. The huge overpay for a single year is just the first part to get him to Carolina.

The team doesn't need to offer him the qualifying offer so really not much of a bargaining chip unless he has a huge year and with the depth the Hurricanes have that seems highly unlikely.

Not as much leverage as Laine and Tkachuk, since Kotkaniemi would probably get nowhere near $6million on the open market.

Also, to me it seems like Kotkaniemi and the Canes have already worked out the framework for a multi-year deal and this loaded first year was just to get him out of Montreal.

If Kotkaniemi were to have a breakout season in Carolina, in which he becomes worth $6m then that's a great problem for the Canes to have.

Offer sheets don’t allow for negotiation. You offer it to the player and it’s signed or not.

I have seen KK a fair bit in Montreal and he has always left me underwhelmed. He just seems invisible out there and rarely makes an impact on the game.

It is similar to Bennett. The expectations were high due to his draft pedigree and he was rushed. After a while it appeared to be a bad fit with the team.

The difference is, Bennett would still show flashes of potential and bring an impact to the game with his physical play, KK brings none of that.

I think his ceiling is a Danault-lite, and his floor is Mark Jankowski.

I would happily let him walk and rue the day I selected him over Tkachuk (because centre = good)
