You have to be kidding.
The Flames would have never traded Fox if they had an extra year of control, and he would have to sign with the team that drafted him or sit for an entire season until the Flames rights over him expired.
The only reason Treliving traded the guy was because his advisor told the Flames he was going to play out his college career and go UFA instead of signing with Calgary.

It sucks Flames lost out on a guy who decided to wait it out and sign with his desired team, but Flames did come out looking pretty good in getting both Lindholm and Hanifin out of it. So I'm not sure why some people are so bitter about it.
Again, my solution to this would be to extend the window to 5 years, but I'm not sure you'd be able to get the NHLPA to agree to that.

When you follow the rules to the letter, that's not bening. And it's not like an unintended consequence, what Fox did was excatxly what was contemplated if a player wanted to go that route.
|
Yeah, I messed up with my wording.
He didn't bend or break rules. He used them to his advantage and that's why I think the rule should be changed.
It's bad enough that we have to watch every undrafted free agent that is worth a damn sign with NYR, Chicago, etc. It's just salt in the wound when one that you drafted can use the rules in his favor to sign with those teams too.

Let's collectively spam the Flames IG and Twitter signing posts with Eichel.
They need to know this is still very front of mind for us and we will not go quietly into the night!

Stuff like this is always interesting... could mean they are trying to make sure the cap situation is all sorted and confirmed before doing something else.

No guarantees of course but it’s rare for players to be signed and then traded in the NHL so I would assume any possible package for Eichel at this point would not include Valimaki. If Dube is signed soon as well I doubt he would be part of any possible deal either. Buffalo has long been reported to be asking for what would be the equivalent to 4 first round picks. If Treliving (like other GMs right now) is not willing to go that far, his offer might be the equivalent of 3 first round picks:
1st round pick in 2022 (top 5 protected if eichel plays more than 50 games this season, top 10 protected if he plays less than 50 games this season)
+ One of Zary/Coronato/Pelletier
+ Monahan (could be traded for a first round pick at the TDL if he’s back to full health).
Buffalo could end up waiting it out hoping Treliving will add another one of the previous first round picks so they would end up with 2/3 of Calgary’s top prospects.

Other than a long shot Eichel trade, I fear we're looking at our 21-22 roster. Something needs to happen or we're due for yet another disappointing bubble season.

Could be. Obviously getting your hopes up with this team is dangerous but you have to have your RFAs locked in before you make a move for a 10M contract...

If they are looking at spending to the cap, which I don't know that they are, they should at least use the cap space as an asset and trade it for other assets by taking on contracts teams want to rid themselves of. As long as they are short term of course.
The Flames could at least become a broker for deals.

The Flames are always at the cap, and they will be this season. And it won't be by selling our cap space for assets. The Flames best players are on their prime, we have a win now coach locked in, we have a new arena coming, there is no way that the Flames aren't going to invest in winning.

If they are going to spend to the cap, they will have to do it via trade.
There are no UFA's left worth that kind of AAV, well, except for maybe Palmieri, but supposedly he's already signed by Lou and they're keeping it close to the vest or something?
I can't believe Eichel and Tarasenko haven't been traded yet. Starting to feel like it might not happen before the season starts.

I'm not convinced. They must have lost a boat load of money last season.
Sutter is the kind of coach that can get the most out of pluggers, and to an extent players in general. Part of their thought process for hiring him may have been getting bang for their buck without having to spend to the cap.
Just my two cents and I could be wrong obviously. We will see I guess depending what Treliving pulls off.

Cap friendly has us with 6.125m left
Subtract .750m for Vlader not listed = 5.375
Subtract +/- 1.75m for Dube = 3.625m
Monahan (6.375m) + 3.625m = Eichel (10.0m)
Coincidence? I think not.

Guys like Valimaki and Dube get signed in the normal course of business all the time.
They absolutely could be traded.
What else are the Flames to do?
