Yes, changes made from pure desperation to make the team substantially worse are so much better than Treliving's patient approach.

I don't know if its patience or borderline inaction. I guess we will find out the master plan in a couple of weeks. Im sure he has something cooking. He cant actually want to go into the season with this roster I hope.

Yep. We don't know its a patient approach. The legs could be kicking wildly under the water.

For sure, but the point is that Ken Holland's deplorable work this summer should not in any way compare positively to whatever has already happened with the Flames to date. Whether this is it or not for the roster, it is still better than the astonishing ineptitude unfolding in Edmonton.

The Oilers being bad doesn't make us a better team. It's just a distraction so people feel better.

That has been my thinking too. The moment he started saying he could be cleared to play early in the season (or beginning of if he had surgery soon enough) I figured that was only going to make Buffalo want to hold longer. Whatever team gets him will be giving up one or more productive pieces without getting immediate Eichel and would be more likely to pick high in the draft.
It's another reason why I think competing teams are at a bit of a disadvantage as a pick from them just wont be worth as much as a pick from a team rebuilding or trying to even stay competitive.

Sad but true. They are at the phase where they are trying to push in all their chips to support McDrai but cant really procure any discounts on top tier FAs or players due to being in a less than desirable destination with a less than desirable reputation. I dont think Holland has been very good since the cap era but it has to be just as hard or worse for Edmonton to make a decent deal as it is for the Flames. Does make me feel good that they cant seem to get out of the woods either though I have to admit.

If they get goaltending like last season I could see them possibly finishing atop the Pacific division but that's a big "IF" as Smith is going to his the skids at any time. McDavid and Draisaitl seem to really beat up on bad teams and there's more than a few in the division. Also they have been relatively fortunate in the injury department over the past few seasons and if one of McDavid or Draisaitl misses significant time they will be in big trouble. The division is really hard to gauge as almost every team has major question marks.

The Oilers actually made some good moves in my opinion. Don't like the Hyman contract, but he does make them better. Ryan instead of Khaira is an upgrade. They kept Barrie who would actually be a top pairing defenseman on the Flames, as sad as that is. Foegele makes them a little tougher as well.
I still can't believe they are banking on Mike Smith to carry them again though.

LOL
No he wouldn't. He is a PP specialist who can't play defense. Do we need a PP specialist? Definitely. But that doesn't mean he would be a top pairing guy.

Except Barrie wouldn't be top pairing. Tanev/Hanafin.

Not sure Barrie would fit anywhere but the 3rd pairing here.
Hanifin-Barrie? Nope.
Zadorov-Barrie? Yikes.
Valimaki-Barrie? Sure, that might work better.

I wonder if Chara would come to Calgary. I think Treliving gets a veteran D and I'd love vantanen or Chara.

Last year someone suggested Chara might come here and I suggested he'd rather chase a cup (and was mocked for that opinion). He chose the Caps. I was right.
Same opinion from me this year. If Chara comes back it won't be in Calgary.
Pretty sure Tre has tried for Vatanen before so that makes some sense. Plus he'd be cheap.
