I like those renderings. I never really disliked the design at all.
Probably a stupid question, but "Calgary Event Center" is just a placeholder for now, right? I know naming rights will be bid on, but it won't be "Scotia Bank Event Center", will it?

possibly...depends on whether enough snow is able to accumulate and if it is south/west facing as opposed to north/east facing...

if the overall opening (OA) percentage is high like more than 50%, snow should, in theory, blow through....on the other hand, if it is more opaque (OA of 20%) no a lot of snow would 'get in'...

its probably not going to be an issue, as the face, even where it 'peels back' doesn't seems like it would be able to accumulate much snow...

Unlikely. It will be whatever name the corporate sponsor wants it to be.

If you look at the early info for the Little Caesars Arena, it was called the "Detroit Events Center" until the sponsorship was finalized.

The front that appears to be all glass with some dividers looks fantastic. In previous renders it looked like some static vertical lines over the surface material but this is much better.
I don’t know about the corrugated aluminum or whatever is happening on that end but honestly, a rendering will probably never be very accurate of what it ends up being. The idea of it sounds like it could get dated very quickly but who knows. These renderings definitely have some curb appeal now.

These paint a nicer picture, but I'm still concerned about the north elevation. The subtle lifting of the facade and the gradient between transparent and opaque are great concepts, but both effects are too subdued, making them seem like afterthoughts that will be quickly value engineered out.

Was just about to post I like the new renders where it's showing off a lot more glass than the first set of renders.

I think I'm starting to get a bit more optimistic after this new set of renders. I'll still reserve final judgement until it's finished building.

love the updated render's for sure. I'm wondering if the center will be entrenched with led lighting... I could see that absolutely happening...

The perforated aluminum on the NW side resembles the mesh netting on the goal net; I’m sure it’s not intentional, but that’s the perspective I see from the renderings.

Focusing all of the public interaction to just Olympic Way and having that long wall along 12th Ave still interrupts the flow of the streetscape in a really poor way.
It's a big if that the north side wall will look as nice as the render once constructed, and even if it ends up looking as nice as the rendering, that's still an entire block that has very limited placemaking opportunities.

Didn’t say anything negative about the initial renderings because I wanted to see more before forming an opinion but I have to say, upon seeing the newest ones I’m very optimistic. I feel like any concern with the “peeled back” wall will be put to rest with the correct lighting highlighting that feature. They could use it to display huge projected videos occasionally but completely lit up with a variating blanket of light colours regularly and it would look amazing to me.

I'd like to see those panels put on a lightshow similar to Telus Sky

It's funny how a couple of new renderings from some different angles can change people's opinions of this.
I think it does look a lot better in the new renders. For me, the biggest difference is all the extra people makes it seem livelier. Also, being able to see people inside the building on the multiple concourse levels helps give it some energy too.

I hope these new exterior renderings mean we'll be getting some interior elevations at some point. That will be a big difference-maker for me.

These renders are better, but I still don’t feel the design elements work together that well, and those blank walls on the North, south east, and presumably east are disappointing.

The new renders do look better but I thought this building was already designed and ready to go, sounds like it's still in the design stage. The whole thing just seems rushed to me and even poorly planned.

I'm definitely liking the renderings a bit more, but I'm still generally kinda bummed about the overall conservative design they've taken here; could have been a really memorable architectural statement given its predecessor - but it misses the mark so far IMO. As well, I'm nervous as hell about the material selection; this building and its presence will be very dependent on the materials used. I hope the clients don't value engineering the crap out of what is currently being proposed. I'll try and stay optimistic that they won't.
