I would be very surprised if Gaudreau only signed for 5 years. That leaves so much money on the table.

If the flames get a deal done, I think it will look like this:

$8.85 million per year
8 years
27 team NTC

It depends where he wants to finish his high level career and whether he feels like betting on himself over that span.

His NTC would allow him to control where he finishes his career. Any time a player makes it public that the want to be traded, they end up getting traded within a year. If Gaudreau wants to finish his career with an east coast team, all he would have to do is announce that he wants to be traded. If he put his five team list to include teams Calgary would likely never trade to (Edmonton/Vancouver) and/or teams that would not be looking to add Gaudreau (teams that are rebuilding), he could force the team into trading him to basically one or two teams.

He gets his maximum payday while also getting to play where he wants to now (Calgary) and later (Philly/Boston/New Jersey)

Heck. With somebody like Dim Jim being a GM you may have a 3rd unthought of option!
MacKinnon is only 16 months older than McDavid. If contracts are considered, I'd definitely lean to NM.

2x6.3M and the re-sign to 8x$12.5M taking him to 8x12.5M taking him to age 35 (would turn 36 at start of next deal). His game doesn't seem as reliant on freakish speed, so he's more likely to age like Crosby.

5 more years of MavI at 12.5 then you're re-signing him at age 29.

All true. But there’s no guarantee for him that his preferred team wants him, especially after a couple of relatively lean years. And they might decide to make him a crummy offer since he’s expressed his wishes.

I assume you mean his preferred team would make the flames a crummy offer (not Gaudreau himself) since he would be under contract with the flames still. That’s the flames problem though at that point… we’ve seen in the past how NMC/NTC limit the returns on players that have asked for a trade. Teams just accept it and make the trades anyways. I cannot recall any time when a player has publicly asked to be traded and not be moved within a year of the request. So he would definitely get moved if he made that request.

Anyways, If his preferred team does not want him at that point, they would likely not want him if he was a free agent at that point either. This scenario still allows Gaudreau to max his salary and contract while still having the flexibility to ask for a trade to another team (virtually of his choosing) during his final years in the league.

I’m saying if he plays hardball and ultimately goes UFA, his offers may not be what he could get now.

I don't like these 2 topics in the same thread and I don't like looking in it multiple times a day with no news. But I do like complaining so that's a win I guess

Possibly. I think he wants the deal done now anyways.

If he gets 8 years, it will be a very big payday. I also think multiple options would be available to him in terms of contract structure. I could see Treliving offering him things like this:

8 years x $8.5 million with limited NTC (22 teams)
8 years x $7.5 million with full NTC
7 years x $8.5 million with limited NTC (27 teams)
7 years x $7.5 million with full NMC (+ heavy signing bonus contract)

Gaudreau’s camp would likely be asking for similar term lengths and wanting an extra $1 million on each year. The real number is likely in between and somewhere in there.

Of course you don’t, as that favours the Flames.

But any player with leverage at the age of 28 wants to sign a 8 year extension. It pays him way more money when he gets older than the market would at that time.

If the flames only wanted to sign him him for 5 years or less, they would likely have already traded him, as they know it won’t get it done.

He wants to play on a winning team like all players do. Lowe is just randomly trying to mash together new faces/ individual players like Keith and Hyman, and showing a commitment to Nurse, to try and prove to McDavid that they are trying to win. But are they a good fit for the team building concept. Likely not but if McDavid leaves...

Again, the day McDavid was drafted, and for years and years prior, the Oilers do not out together a good team, they have skilled players that are expected to elevate the rest of their team while their development stagntes and then slugs because thats all they can fit under the cap after overpaying marginal.players to come to Edmonton. Toss in upper management meddling with players individually and over ruling the coach and GM and the dysfunction further breaks up any semblance of a solid team of players.

Wow, so an 8 year deal takes him to age 37.

What does a 34-35-36 year old Gaudreau look like on the ice?

Better than 35 year old Coleman and 35 year old Markstrom.

I think Gaudreau will age pretty well, just because oh his durability and style of play.

I'm dying for any Eichel rumours that aren't from NY Beat Writers or ESPN/NBC writers.

This past week and a half has felt really long.

If those are his measurements, not particularly good.

Ron Jeremy was short and he made a professional career into his 60s

If I am JG and his agent I look at MT and what the Flames are prepared to pay him eg 9M and that is the lowest I go. He is better than MT and rightly will want more than MT. That was a truly awful contract that was given to MT.
