Like I'm sick of the guy, but I don't think he's dumb. He has to know that this just makes the team harder to construct into a contender.

What’s your evidence that McDavid is smart? His willingness to sign a max term contract, supposedly at a discount? His interior design skills? His interviews? His excitement over getting Keith?

This is a panic move because they painted themselves into a corner. I don't buy that Holland has a plan right now. If the plan was to maximize the next 3 years then they would have protected Larsson over Bear.. Larsson did a lot of the heavy lifting defending and now that shifts to Nurse, which isn't exactly a strong part of his game.i don't think it will take long for this to blow up for the Oilers. The fan base will be on him quite hard like they were with Lucic.
I am predicting Skinner for Nurse in a few years.

So in other words, no one on the Oiler blueline can go out on the ice without McDavid. Solution: play McDavid for 60 minutes!

I believe he won the CHL Scholastic player of the year.
Just like Dougie Hamilton and Dustin Wolf.

With all due respect to past winners of that award, I say “meh”. That means he got good grades in HS while playing junior. Meanwhile, other guys went to university.

He may be a smart kid, but that in no way guarantees that he is any good at evaluating hockey talent and team construction. For all we know McGenius is completely convinced that the Oilers as constructed today are a dynasty in waiting.

I never said he was smart. I said I don't think he's dumb. I don't think you need to be smart to see this contract is a ludicrous anchor.

I think he and a lot of hockey players don’t think that way. Same as when they got Keith and he supposedly was pumped. NHL players by and large don’t look at advanced stats, they look at point totals, they are big on name value, etc. McDavid doesn’t seem to look at Keith and think “washed up big contract”. He thinks “that guy who was top of the league”.

My biggest hope now is that Nurse adopts the "Kassian I got my money now bitches" downward spiral. Actually, it's not even a spiral, it's just an abrupt full stop.

Have been reading a lot of HFOil for the lulz lately. One fan actually just commented that he feels Nurse took a bit of a hometown discount in the amount of $250K or so. This is, of course, in view of the Seth Jones and Zach Werenski contracts as they're all, you know, basically the same player.

It's actually kind of a tough call as to whether this contract is better or worse than Jones. It's close, at least.

Darnell Nurse is a #4 defender at best on a contenting team. Way too stupid and way too limited in his skills. Needs to point suck off of generational talent to be effective. Just a mess of a player.

Jones has been in the past a #1 dman, and is a good bet to get back there.
Nurse has had one season that was OK, and advanced stats suggest it wasn't very good.

Really, if anything, it's a promising sign that misfortune is likely to afflict the Oilers in the near future.
The fact that it's Jim Matheson just furthers this.

While this is true, you could argue that Nurse is on the upswing while Jones is trending down over multiple years.
I'm just saying there's a debate... but it's not a debate you want your newly-signed #1D to be involved in regardless of whether you're Chicago or Edmonton.
