Another good comparable is Dougie Hamilton and I thought that was a good deal too. Hamilton is hardly elite defensively too

Only Fox is still due a long term contract, out of the good young defencemen. Makar, Heiskenan, Werenski, Hamilton, Chabot, etc, are all signed long term already (for less than Nurse).

I’m fondly recalling the halcyon days of Brad Treliving extending Gio for 6 years at $6.75M.
Things made sense then.

Even some Flames fans fall for the Edmonton media hype from time to time...the guy isn't very good. If you play 30 mins a night in Edmonton you are going to put up points.
Out of the league James Neal had a 20 goal pace a year ago.
$100 says Nurse has less goals in more games this season without the Sens 3rd and 4th stringers to light up

Come on Rangers 10M...that will take some of the sting away.

Worlds a ####ed up place when Nurse is 74 million dollar hockey player.

reminds me of the time when Edmonton fans were justifying Koskinen's contract extension as a function of the 'going market rate'.
Nurse is a pretty good defenseman...he's not close to that contract though - I thought he was 7.5M at best. While there's always a chance that he is able to sustain his play, I think that is pretty unlikely...

Nah, the Oilers have shown what kind of value they would use any savings from this contract on and it wouldn't be good.

He’ll be 35 when the next contract would kick in, this isn’t something for him or his people to worry about.

This has the makings of being a boat anchor contract. Well done Hollandaze!

Maybe they forgot to mention that the amount is in Canadian dollars which would make more sense...

Nah, they probably wanted the big signing bonuses in the back end years. They know that once Holland is gone the age old oilers tradition of "buy out the last GMs bad contracts" is on the table. Signing bonuses basically make the contract buyout proof in the last 4 years.

When you pay a guy $9.25M you want to be able to play him in any/all/most situations.
His defensive numbers are so bad the Oilers just can't do that.
That's the issue with the contract.
His offensive numbers last year were really good, though he saw a spike in on ice and personal shooting percentage suggesting a sustainability issue.
One thing he has been able to sustain though is being near the bottom of the league in terms of shot suppression and expected goals against.
That's not the guy you want to pay $9.25M. The league showed they have that figured out with Barrie the last two off seasons, how could Edmonton not figure that out in house?

I have gone through this thread in detail, and reframed from posting, until know, as I still in stun mode due to this signing.
I don’t think anyone can argue with a straight face that Nurse is worth this contract.
Buy I consider the dilemma of the Oilers. They clearly need to win now. Does Nurse help them win now. I assume that answer is yes.
I assume Nurse made it very clear that he was willing to play out his contract and become a UFA unless the Oilers overpaid a huge amount with this contract.
The Oilers blinked and signed a deal even though they knew it was a massive overpayment. They had too, no one is that stupid ( that’s a debate for another thread lol).
But in their position, they may not have had any better choice.
I suspect that Treliving in a similar situation would likely not have blinked. He would have attempted to trade Nurse for a cheaper alternative with more control.
But then, Calgary is not run by McDavid.

Nurse might very well help the Oilers “with now” on the ice. He has dramatically improved from what he was a few years ago. The problem is this boat anchor contract will not help the Oilers win now. As many posters have said, it prevents them from signing other pieces.
I do see Nurse as a better player than he was 2 or 3 years ago. But no way he is worth 9.25.
If I were an Oilers fan, I would be calling for Holland to be fired immediately. I think and 8 year deal around 7.25 would be much more realistic, and even that would be a bit too much to be paying Nurse. Crazy.

Once again, and I cannot stress this enough....
That was in the garbage 'North Division' during a shortened Pandemic season. He got to play bad teams rather frequently.
Conclusions really shouldnt have been drawn at all based on last season. Its as literally an outlier as its possible to get.
Good for Nurse. He took the Oilers to the cleaners.
Once again the Oilers have demonstrated a fundamental failure to evaluate talent.

I keep seeing this sentiment that McDavid wanted this. Do we really think that? If I was McDavid I'd be throwing my hands up and laughing in disbelief ala his stalwart McSwept performance from the bench.
Like I'm sick of the guy, but I don't think he's dumb. He has to know that this just makes the team harder to construct into a contender.

If you pay a guy $9M+ you better be able to put him out against the opposition’s top line.
