Why is it on him when your supposedly leadership tells him not to play his type of game anymore. The type of game which he excelled at for his 1st 4 years in a league and got him a $7mil/season + contract.
But lets be honest. This group has been soft as kitten pillow toilet paper for years now. When everyone else tells you to back off and conform, why wouldn't Tkachuk's play fall off a cliff?
Once again we don't know that.
But past that I'd hope pride and future contract value would be enough to keep showing up.
I'm surprised that no one has played the Gaudreau and Monahan need to fix their nutrition and diet yet.
I do find it interesting how MacKinnon had a good rookie year than had three straight years where you can effectively argue that he underachieved. It seems to line up with Zadorov's remarks where he took charge and changed his own diet and training routine and saw huge gains in his own performance, and insisted that everyone else on the team also do the same. It does seem to have catapulted his own game, and as a result the team has improved too.
Who knows when it's too much though. After game one in round two, Vegas pretty much man handled them and made MacKinnon ineffective in those games. Was it because the Vegas has a better team, or because Vegas was better coached, or how does it all add up when every minute factor is considered? Back when Chris Pronger supposedly suggested the Flyers all pledge for a dry February that Jeff Carter and Mike Richards didn't agree with those two were sent out of Philly shortly after. Those two eventually ended up in L.A. and won two cups...the Flyers really have not done much since trading those two. Did those two completely change their ways after? I don't know.
Even with the Jordan comparison's from what I remember it was after they had won where he really started to rail harder on his team mates. The thing that I took from the Last Dance was that Phil Jackson really had to guide him to understand how much he needed his team mates to become a champion. He couldn't simply beat the Pistons by himself which was what they were trying to do before Phil Jackson. After winning one championship he started demanding more of them to keep winning because he grasped how hard it would be to continue doing so.
Regarding the Flames, something had to happen that prompted the team to remove Ward and put Sutter in place. We can speculate as to what exactly it was, but something had to prompt them to remove Ward that shortly into the season and bring in a veteran guy like Sutter in his place. Whatever it was had to be something compelling enough to make the team believe it had to be addressed pretty urgently to make that move and that it could get quite bad if not addressed right away. I don't think this was some out of patience owner trying to save a 56 game season with no fans, it had to be something more.

[QUOTE=gvitaly;7947655]Due to popular demand here's some more from the interview:
• You were saying that Nichushkin is the most superstitious player you know.
o Yes, Valeri is.
• What sort of superstitions does he have?
o First of all he believes in god, and he has a bunch of icons(religious works of art, common in the eastern orthodox church).
Do you believe in God?
• No, I’m an atheist.
o If he scores a goal with a stick, he plays with it until it completely falls apart. He tapes/fixes it just so it doesn't fall apart.
o I’ve seen many Americans and Canadians that are even more superstitious though. They lose their minds if something goes wrong in their game prep.
• What’s the strangest superstition you have seen?
o Tyler Ennis, he brushes his teeth before a game. His teeth are super white. I think he brushes them like 20 times a day. We have disposable toothbrushes in the locker room. Every time before he gets out for the first period. He gives his teeth a really hard scrub.
• What about you? I heard you had a superstition that you had to take a shower before a game.
o Yes, I have a routine. It changes a little bit.
o I always take a shower before a game. Now I jump into a cold bath right before a game to get my blood pumping.
o Two years ago, I wasn’t taking cold baths, but I started taking them again this year.
• Why did you start doing that?
o I don’t know I think I saw someone doing it during my first year in Buffalo.
o Do you know Patrick Marleau? He has something like 1700 games played. He takes a cold bath after each period. Multiply 1700 x 3… He takes off all his clothes/equipment gets in the bath and gets it all back on after, every period.
So did you get it from him?
• Honestly, probably not, but I can’t remember.
o You just try to do things before the game that would make you feel better during the game. So that you are better prepared. Each player has his own routine.
o My routine is:
A morning skate, I usually wake up at around 8, drive my daughter to school, then I go for the skate.
After the skate I drive home, my wife cooks me food. I usually have two pieces of grilled red fish, some sweet potatoes, half a sliced Avocado, and tomatoes with (didn’t say which) oil. I also have a chickpea pasta without sauce. The benefit of chickpea pasta is that it doesn’t have as many empty carbs. You don’t need them for the game because you would quickly run out of energy. It has more proteins which give you more energy during the game.
I finish eating around noon. Then I go play counter strike. I play 3 games.
I turn off my computer, sit, and meditate for 20 minutes. I have an app on my iPhone. It has a special sensor/disk/pad you place on your artery, put on headphones. You end up feeling the music through your entire body and it helps you relax. I lay down like that shutting my brain completely.
I put on (special compression) pants for 30 minutes to get my legs ready for the game. I listen to music during that time.
I have a shower, put on a suit, and drive to the rink.
• You don’t even sleep/nap?
o Yes, this year I stopped doing that.
o I used to only play one game of counter strike and nap for 2 hours. That resulted in me feeling a bit sluggish during the game.
o This year I changed it to no sleep, and I feel a lot more energy during the game. When you sleep 8.5-9 hours at night, that’s enough for your body. You don’t need that nap because it throws off your biological clock a bit.
• What if you lose all 3 games in counter strike?
o Then I rage for a bit, especially if I get bad teammates.
o That’s how NHL players get ready
• You remember when we were taught as kids? We were always told to throw out the phone before the game.
o Yes, yes. MacKinnon is playing fortnight during all the time before he drives to the game. He doesn’t even sleep.
o MacKinnon likes to lose at fortnight because then he comes to the game angry and has a better game as a result.
o Many players are like that.
o They make a lot better screens now, and have special glasses, so your eyes don’t get as tired before the hockey game.
o The video games help hockey players focus, because you have to use your quick reaction time, which keeps you on the edge.
o It helps me but that’s not for everyone.[/QUOTE
Based on vitaly’s translation of a YouTube interview it sounds to me like big Z has a high GAF quotient….as others Posters have alluded too…..it’s something we’ve been sorely lacking….

So why else would Tkachuk turn into a mental midget on a dime?
He never remotely showed anything like that before the Toronto game.
We'll know for sure this year with our useless captain off to Seattle.
Of course he showed that. For all the “he gets in players heads” there’s as many examples of him being thrown off. Like the game after the Kassian hit. Like the game after the Doughty elbow.
IMO his post whistle stuff always looks like “look how hard I’m trying” to me. Do it before the whistle, not after.
1) He wouldn't quit on the team because they didn't beat up Muzzin right away. For sure it had to be that locker room meeting where they told him they don't want him to agitate the other teams anymore because they are too weak to stand up for him. Tkachuk's season turned 180 after that game.
Besides didn't Gaudreau say in an interview after most of the bench didn't even know what happened at the end of the game to Tkachuk.
It seems like my translation just went viral(ish) on twitter. I didn't expect that at all. I hope all our twitter friends find the 5 parts I posted. if you have any questions about my interpretation, I will gladly answer them, or even point you to which point in the video Zadorov says what he says.
I just wanted to point out I am not the one that took the interview. The interview was posted on youtube. I think their channel deserves a like for the great content.

I've seen it all over the place today.
Even made it onto Bardown.
Well done.

Here's one that skips all the annoying points highlights and just shows the good stuff
I hope Lucic is on the ice when Zadorov is throwing big hits like these next season. Zadorov has got hands of pudding. He can't fight; his skill is turning his body into a wrecking ball.

Perry
Neal
Kadri
Earning brownie points already. Keep that up and he'll be a Flames fan favourite.
If he can catch McDavid clean, we should build him a statue as tall as the Calgary Tower.

He was saying that players are a bit weary of committing to a crushing hit on McDavid because they're afraid that McDavid would turn them inside out, and they would end up on the wrong side of the highlight reel. That's why I doubt he will get the chance for a huge open ice hit, maybe something in the corners.

They are also likely worried about the 82 game suspension
I'm not at all looking at what he's been in the NHL up until now-it's the player that Sutter will make him in to. Darryl knows exactly how to use a player like Z, and how to maximize his potential and usefulness. He will be a fan favorite, no doubt about it.
