Details is a bit glib, but sometimes there’s multiple deals on the table for different $$ and terms and there’s back and forth about them. The basics around overall compensation have been worked out but not stuff like that. Or bonus v regular salary structure. Or NMCs around the next CBA, in anticipation of buyout ability.

To have 100% control where he goes, or to just go to UFA in a year.
I don’t think it will come to that, unless he just lied about his intentions to Treliving.

They won’t be trading him at the TDL. It they can’t sign him, they will trade him before the season starts. Treliving is well aware that teams will pay the highest price for a full season of Johnny and that in this case the player’s leverage increases the father we get into the season.

Right, but even then he could just name one of the teams he wants to go to, get traded there, and if it’s not the EXACT one he wants to be on, sign with that team during UFA
Like, imagine a scenario where a player who doesn’t want to be here chooses to spend the entire year here, as opposed to getting traded to a team he wants to go to… out of spite… it’s kind of hilarious I guess.

If I’m not mistaken, the acquiring team can choose to honor the ntc or not. The flames can trade him to one of the 5, with a second deal in place to flip to a team who wants him. Players usually work with teams too, they don’t want the Tom Erixon reputation.

Nope.
All NTC/NMCs move with players now.

Now I should mention re: Eichel…I (unfortunately) have no solid intel and am purely guessing based on word out of Buffalo and what Calgary has in it’s pipeline. But if rumoured teams like Minny, NYR, LA, Ana have all backed off, the price could be off the charts.

He would do it to have 100% control.
It’s not uncommon. Especially when it’s such a short trade to list.

Can people please stop suggesting Tkachuk for Tarasenko swaps?
I can’t fathom why any fan would want to trade our best young player for a declining 30 year old that Seattle wouldn’t take for free.

When did that change? If I remember correctly, I thought the Flames honoured Lucic’s when he came? There was someone else traded not long ago that didn’t accept it long with the trade? I can’t recall who.

Changed last year with the new CBA. Went away along with the FA week long negotiating window.

How common is it? Give me an example of that scenario happening.
It still only gives him 84% control. There is no hundred. He can name whatever 5 teams he wants, but he has no control over what happens after that.
The Flames could easily just send him somewhere on the list with a draft pick and retained salary for the year. Since spiting yourself for leverage is obviously an option.
I bet you there’s not even 5 teams that wouldn’t take Gaudreau, depending on the deal.

Maybe the holdup is Gaudreau's extension with Buffalo..

I wonder if Wolf is something they covet too. Buffalo that is.

Well, the Flames can’t send him with full retained salary. It has to be 50%. So no teams that are right at the cap, unless they send salary back (a rarity for a rental).
In any event, the bargaining power goes way down. Say he lists Edmonton, Colorado, TB, Vancouver and Philly. Philly is the only viable trading partner and they offer a fourth.

Flames have to move cap to get Eichel now.
Maybe they send a boatload of futures to the Sabres for Eichel and then recover some of those futures by dealing Tkachuk?
