I don't know. I think if you can play Coleman on the third line you have a good team. That should be the goal here. Not sure he's a 2nd liner.

I'm out of thanks, so just quoting to agree with this. Nothing transformative for the Flames today, but I think they've done enough to get back in the mix.
I think the Flames will be better than both Vancouver and Edmonton.

Based on what we have done, and what others in the Pacific have done, we are not finishing ahead of Edmonton or Vancouver

I think he's second liner based on hes points per 60 minutes played.
I just doubt that he'll be a second liner from the ages of 32 to 36, which happens to be the majority of the contract.

I think that's undervaluing Coleman a fair bit, but even saying that there's a reason why the Stanley Cup Champions (2x) let this player walk. You don't pay this type of player this type of money into this part of their career and expect to succeed.
Treliving confirms no extension done for Johnny.

SC champs had him as top line in 5 v 5 goals and top 6 in points, if I remember correctly. He is a huge upgrade compared to last year.

Sure. The reason is that they finished the year with less than zero cap room and can't re-sign all their players.

Pretty poor asset management to not get that extension in place, you extend him or ship him out before his NMC kicked in…..

It's not that the acquisitions today are bad per se. It's just that none of the big holes were filled and options are running out, if they haven't already. This is still a team that will struggle to score and recently lost a top 4 defenseman.
Looking at the players in and players out since the trade deadline last season, and this is a slightly worse team.
Coleman > Ryan
Nothing < Bennett
Nothing <<< Giordano
Vladar =/= Rittich
Lewis =/= other depth randos
Zadarov =/= Nesterov
Hopefully some prospects are ready to step in. Other than that, trades are an option, but this team lacks any real areas of strength to trade from or surplus cap space, so any trades will likely be lateral moves.

I think they are trying to replicate what Tampa Bay had with Coleman-Gourde-Goodrow.
Coleman = Coleman
Pitlick = Goodrow
And I think they are hoping Backlund can bring what Gourde brought for Tampa.
When you have a true elite shutdown line it really opens up your other two top nine lines for more offensive minutes.

Parsons will be playing in the ECHL.
Wolf and a solid AHL vet would be the way to go.

An awful lot of 'less is more' from Treliving and co the last week.
- Sensible selections at the draft.
- Still has all the assets he needs to get Eichel.
- Team got tougher to play against - Zadorov is a bully, Coleman is a quality player who can produce 5v5
- Possibly solved the backup position for $750k for 2 years, and all it cost was a 3rd. Hopefully Sutter plays him.
Yeah, they're moves around the edges, and yeah Coleman got a year more than he should've, but there's nothing standing out as especially ill-advised.
I can't stress enough, nothing Treliving did today took him out of the running for Eichel, and Jack Eichel is still available.
So we wait and see. As MissTeeks might say, the quest stands upon the edge of a knife.

Edmonton is pretty much the exact same team. What they did do is add an aging expensive blueliner that can't play any more. They traded away one of their better defensemen in Bear (as sad as that is) for some depth on the bottom lines, when they needed better defense. Then they added a slow as sin blueliner that will look right at home in those garish orange uniforms, because the guy is a traffic cone. Still no depth, still no defense, and still crappy goaltending. Edmonton is the same as they were last season.
Not sure Vancouver really improved either. Any team that adds OEL is in for a looooooong season. I just don't see the sum of the parts that Vancouver added making them much better than they were last season, when the Flames, having a terrible year, made the Canucks their bitch. If there is one team we can blame our draft position on, it's the Vancouver Canucks. Don't expect them to be any better this season as well. For every good move they made, they made a bad to balance it out. And then you still have OEL. The give that keeps giving (it away).

They do still have space for another top-6 winger.

This is literally just all Treliving ever does. He also now has his star forward in the last year of his contract where that star forward has a very restrictive NTC.
|
He didn't overspend on a good depth forward.
You can debate if teams would be better served by sitting out UFA season but the fact is if you are going to play in that market that's what you pay. So how is it an overspend?
