I don't get why TO turned down a 5th and a 7th to get nothing, only to prevent oilers from $500K in cap relief... are they even going to remain in the same conference?

Also, I really don't dislike this signing for the oilers. McDavid is their window. Nothing about him in Edmonton makes it seem he is a Crosby, Iggy, Ovi or any other player who wants to stay in the organization who signed him. When his current contract ends, its good bye to McDavid unless they have some sort of success prior.

Edmonton is right to make a win now attempt, even if not very likely to succeed.

8th year would've brought the cap hit down, potentially to 5.1 AAV. I prefer them to pay more for the 7 years, McDavid will be gone in 7 years regardless
