2) Far from home. Which you can't change.
There are negatives of playing at home too. If you struggle, it can make home very difficult for the player and the family. Especially Philly.
Flames are a good organization though and I think the Gaudreau's recognize this. Flames always consider what's best for the player even if it means a bit of a disadvantage for the team. They've let many players leave who wanted a chance elsewhere. By all accounts, they treat all the families very well. Only negative I've heard is they don't give out enough paraphernalia to the players and families (according to Stajan).
For Johnny, Calgary is a very good destination because he's grown up here and it is essentially another family. Maybe it's not for a UFA who's never played here but for Johnny, it is a second home.
So I could see him staying.

3) Travel. Gaudreau absolutely hates flying. It terrifies him. And Calgary is probably in the top 5 or 6 NHL teams in hours of air travel.

The fear is usually just on takeoffs and landings, most have the same amount of flights and the very few who don't hate the bus trips in the NY corridor

That would actually cost 4 1st rounders... The AAV is calculated over a 5 year span, which results in an offer sheet AAV of $13.3M.

Agreed. I wouldn’t wait it out. The last 18 months should have taught us all you can’t predict things. I take the best deal I can get now if I want to stay and not worry about possibly getting 2-300k more a year from now when it’s just as likely it could be the opposite.

Okposo & Skinner used to ge good, but they're garbage now. Skinner is now bottom-6 NHL level and Okposo may not even be NHL calibre anymore at all.

+ Pettersson has yet to play remotely as well as Eichel.

I'm not sure that's true.
Pettersson's 19-20 regular season and playoffs was better than any season that Eichel's had as an NHLer IMO.
IF you could get Pettersson to sign for $9.5M for 5 or fewer seasons I would do that. 2 1sts, 2nd, 3rd is worth it for him IMO.

Why stop at $9.5M. Why not just go ahead and give $10M x 7. Make it worse for the Canucks. I doubt the extra $500K is a backbreaker for the Flames.
Give the man $70M and you have him from Age 22-29.

Compensation becomes 4x 1st rounders in your scenario

After the schedule was released last week, I saw a tweet that showed each team's travel for next season, and the Flames are actually in the middle of the pack.
https://twitter.com/user/status/1418621488744353792
With the addition of two new teams in the far west, I believe the western teams don't have to travel quite as much as they used to, and the eastern teams have to travel a bit more, so it's not as big a difference as it used to be.
Also, I suspect with most fear-of-flying cases, it's the take-offs and landings that are the biggest problem. Once you're in the air, if it isn't too turbulent, it's probably not too bad. Assuming that "links" on the chart represents the number of individual flights the teams take, the Flames are in a 4-way tie for the 9th fewest.

Yes, because of this, the highest a 7-year offer sheet can go this year without becoming 4 first round picks is an AAV of $7,340,592.14.

But above - it was posted it is 4x 1st rounders as offer sheets are divided over 5 years to calculate AAV. So it is still 4x 1st rounders at $9.5M.
At this point, analyzing the asking price for Eichel. You get to keep Tkachuk. He is worth 2x 1st. Pettersson is easily worth 2x 1st. I pay the 4x 1st to offer sheet Pettersson.

Offer sheets won’t work. Talk to Vancouver about a trade if you think there’s any hope at all they don’t match.

Why? Worst case scenario - you force your rival to lock up $70M ($10M AAV). Cap space is also a competition.

I'd prefer Pettersson over Eichel if only to avoid the major neck surgery risk.

5 x 10.276 mil or whatever keeps us in the reasonable compensation zone while still boning Vancouver if they match. Plus I think it takes Petey right to UFA. If not you could structure it with a stupid QO poison pill or something too.

The trade offers for Eichel have been Tkachuk + 1st + Zary/Pelletier
In this scenario with offer-sheeting Pettersson,
you retain (Tkachuk) - worth 2 1sts
and Pelletier/Zary - worth 1 1st.
So the cost in terms of 1st round picks ends up being the same.
