Related question: how many games will/should the backup play next year?

We know Sutter likes his workhorse starter -- and he has one in Markstrom. But will/should he be playing 65+ games and still have gas in the tank for the playoffs? The most he's played in a season is 60 (both 2017/18 and 2018/19); I'd prefer to keep him in that range but if we're fighting for a playoff spot I could easily see it going above that.

I think it would really depend on the backup, the amount of back to backs, and how hard the Flames are fighting for a playoff spot. I expect the backup(s) to play for 27-32 games.

A lot depends on the difference in the quality of the goalkeepers, the bigger the drop-off the less the backup will play. If you get a league minimum backup then he is most likely to get 15-20 games. On the other hand if you get someone for $2-3M he might get closer to 35 games, but that would be pushing it with Sutter.

I like Bernier, if Carolina does not sign him. Played for Sutter's first cup team in LA

Seattle really wanted Carson Soucy and I don’t blame them.

Lots of goalies around. Although KK would have been a good pick too.

Always a good market for decent dmen, especially ones signed cheaply for a few more years.

Rittich doesn’t suck. He’s just not a franchise goalie.

Tired of the re-treads, bringing back BSD would just be so totally Flames though...

I hope they go with someone else, we know BSD cannot be relied upon even short term if Markstrom goes down late in the season, BSD cracks under pressure.

I like Brossoit as the backup. The Flames drafted him so seems only right that he plays for the Flames for at least part of his career.

I would cut ties with Parsons. I can't believe how much of a nose dive he has taken since leaving junior. Have Wolf an Zagidulin in the AHL. No need for anyone else. If injuries hit Markstrom and whichever backup they sign the season is over anyway.

I like BSD the person, but every time he played last season I just didn't have any confidence in him.

I think an important factor in the discussion around Zagidulin, is the performance of the Heat and their roster in general over the last 2 AHL seasons.

With the team in front of him, that 0.911sv% is pretty good. I hope he pushes whoever the Flames sign as the backup and really give management something to think about. I was hoping they would have given him more starts in the mean nothing 6 games at the end of the season.

Cutting Parsons loose would be crazy given his upside still and the fact he is going to cost minimal to retain.

Too crowded in the AHL, I would rather give Wolf the starts. Unless you put him in the ECHL but then what is the point.

I would like Halak if we could get him for 1.75 - 2.25m on a one year deal. He’s capable of getting our goalies to a 5/3 split in games (5 Markstrom, 3 Halak).

Goalies take a while to develop. If Parsons bucks the injury bug he has all the tools to be an excellent goalie.

Sure you never know with goalies but are the Flames going to put Wolf in the ECHL to fit Parsons in? I hope not.

I am fine with Parsons playing lots of minutes in the ECHL. Quick did.
