Not sure if either of Zagidulin or Parsons are back. Both are RFA.

Zagidulin's had two years in the AHL. If he's not going to get a sniff at a regular NHL gig, the KHL beckons.

Parsons may have run out of time.

My #1 choice - Annti Raanta

He had an off year so somebody might get him on a bit of a bargain show me contract for a season. 0.919 career save % though and I think he'd be good insurance for another Markstrom injury

My #2 choice - Linus Ullmark
My #3 choice - Laurent Brossoit

Instead they don't pan out at the NHL because they never get a chance. He is a winner, let him learn in the NHL, not the minors.

Has this development path ever worked on a goalie picked outside of the first round before? Legitimate question. Seems like a massive jump to expect from the kid

I could be wrong, but I can't think of a goaltender that was taken outside of the top 5 that didn't play at least one season in the AHL in recent history, and a lot of the best ones spent multiple seasons playing in the AHL.

Rushing Wolf would be crazy.

Halak is my number one choice. He will cost a little more but I think teams in this league are realizing the benefit of having two strong options in net. Workload reduction and better odds of accumulating 'extra' points throughout the season. Halak lost his backup job to Swayman this past season but B's fans have continued to be complimentary of him.

I would give him a similar deal to his last one. One year deal, somewhere in the neighborhood of 2M AAV with ~1M in games played bonuses.

This team is going to play tight, suffocating hockey if Sutter has anything to say about it. A strong goaltender every night would be a nightmare for other teams with the style we'll employ.

My secondary target would be Reimer. I think Ullmark is the best goaltender available (well, Grubauer too) but my assumption is that Ullmark wants a starting or 1B role. He may just return to Buffalo anyway.

He could be ready for backup duty within a year or two. As I've pointed out before, nearly every elite goalie in the league played in the NHL by the age of 22.
He just turned 20. While he certainly may be ready for a shot within a year or two this thread is talking about next year or more specifically a few months away.

Geez. I forgot we were missing a 2nd goalie. Usually you can just find a decent one laying around, so hopefully we don't go trade for one.

Who I'd like to get (one of):

Raanta
Brossoit
Rittich

Who I think we'll have:

I actually don't think the Flames backup will get a lot of playing time, and opportunity under Sutter. As a result, I don't see a goalie like Brossoit/Raanta picking Calgary. These goalies would probably be looking for more of a tandem situation, and for a short term so they can prove themselves.

The goalie that immediately jumps at me is Halak. I remember Boston saying they will be moving on from him. It seems like a great fit with a reduced workload for an experienced backup. Rittich is a bit of a question mark, I also think he will be looking for an increased role.

I'd take a shot at Halak. He's a guy who can get hot and I think could be relatively cheap?

Sometimes wonder why we have goalies in the minors. Isn’t this what they are for?

Not enough to carry a team if an injury happens. One bad stretch and its bye bye payoffs. Need an NHL capable guy.

I'd like Reimer or Halak.

I hear you. BSD turned out though. Wolf is looking good but too young.

In between those was supposed to be Gillis (had potential until hip surgery) and Parsons (delayed/stalled?). Maybe Zag? We had a hole blown in our G development pipeline.

I think the only goalie the Flames have signed is Markstrom, right?

A scrappy underdog who will be on a cheap contract who will become a fan favorite because doggone it, why can't Markstrom be consistent/handle the puck better/win the big one, or whatever.

That is what they are for that's why when you had Gillis/Rittich in the minors they got to fight it out so they could grab a spot.

Let's look at the Flames goalies in the minors then:
  • Tyler Parsons - 23 y.o - played one game last year, before that he had a SV% less than .900 playing for the heat.
  • Artyom Zagidulin - 25 y.o - .911SV% in the AHL, .817SV% in the one game he played in the NHL last year.
  • Dustin Wolf - 20 y.o - .895SV% in 3 games for the heat. .940SV% in the WHL last year.

Parsons is injured, and hasn't proven he can cut it at the AHL level. Wolf is still a bit too young to make the jump straight to the NHL. As for Zagidulin, he is doing okay in the AHL, but nothing to write home about. For comparison Rittich had a .924SV% in the AHL when he was called up for his first game. Long story short, the prospects haven't showed anything at the lower levels to give the the opportunity on hockey's biggest stage.

EDIT: Gillis got his opportunity with a SV% of .920 in the AHL. Ortio had a .926...

I’ve got no issues bringing Rittich back - he’s a solid goalie.

We need someone Darryl is comfortable playing 35 times to keep Markstrom upright - whoever that is can’t suck.

Rittich doesn’t suck. He’s just not a franchise goalie.
