If you are right that Pitlick is the same quality as bottom of the barrel UFAs, then it is definitely a bonehead move. I'd suggest that the Flames and Flyers management both see him as a better player than that.

As much as it is nice to think that decent bottom 6 depth is freely available every season, we witnessed how untrue that is last year. Simon, Nordstrom, Ritchie, and Leivo were all available and they were all serious disappointments (except Ritchie, I guess since he was re-signed). I've seen Pitlick described as a middle 6 player more than a 4th liner, so maybe there is more of a player there than many are thinking.

It shouldn’t be a 7th. Test free agency before you give up a draft pick for a fourth liner making 2.2 million

He isn’t even good on the PK

To clarify his cap hit is 1.75 with an actual salary of 2.2 this upcoming year.
The cap hit is what matters.

I understand we need guys like this on the roster to fill depth roles, so I'm not as down on losing a pick as much as some.

But, are there no free agents available this year that could play these positions?

And it again brings up the value in moving players like Brodie and Gio for something, as even these type of picks would have been nice to have more of.

Honest question as I don't know 4th line depth players across the league with any degree of certainty

Pretty much the entire 4th line + 13 forward will be replaced this summer. Ritchie gets one spot, maybe Gawdin gets another. Still two spots open. Players like this are needed, whether by trade, UFA signing or from within
I’m fine with acquiring Pitlick, not as happy if it’s a third.

As for UFA players of this ilk: Nate Thompson, Trevor Lewis could probably be had for minimum. Both are older though and Pitlick might be more effective.

Guy like Cedric Paquette, Matt Calvert might have a similar cap hit to Pitlick.

I guess the thing is, players have to chose Calgary. It’s no difference than with the big name guys, they have to want to sign in Calgary too. It could be that the Flames put out feelers and haven’t had much interest so had to go the trade route.

The bottom six needs upgrading as much as the top 6. Ruzicka and Phillips are not bottom six guys, they need to play in the top 6. Gawdin could be a guy who plays in the bottom six this year but he needs veteran line mates. Pelletier could play bottom six but his development is better served getting top 6 minutes in Stockton.

Don't know the player well but he was 7th in TOI for Airzona last year, and a goodly distance away from the 8th player. Now they aren't a good team but that would seem to reinforce that he's either a 3rd liner or a high end 4th liner.

We have a bottom 5 prospect pool and we just missed playoffs. We need draft picks.
who are the cheap Tyler Pitlick's on the UFA market?

It doesn't matter who they are.
The focus should be on getting a RW, an offensive defenseman, and a backup.

A 4th liner is way down on the priority list in how to use cap space.

Seems like adding more Dominic Simons and Nordstroms. Not bad players, but adding around the edges. And losing a draft pick. I wish he would focus on keeping Ryan Lombergs and Paul Byrons and seeing more Gaudin and Quine.

EDIT: I think we are all mostly saying the same thing. Seems like decent player that we could use, but sucks giving up a mid round pick for someone like this that may be able to be filled from FA or within.

The closest player to Tyler Pitlick on the UFA market is Barclay Goodrow. He just got 6 years at $3.6M.

Which is an absolutely ridiculous contract but that's probably Pitlick's closest comparable.

Even if it is the Oilers 3rd the odds of hitting an NHL player at that selection are low. Pitlick is an NHL calibre player mind you a bottom 6 guy. Still, he fills a need and can help now and only counts for under #2M cap wise. Of course the angry about everything crowd is going to overreact because that is their MO.

As a reminder of upcoming Flames picks

2021
1st
2nd
3rd
3rd (extra oilers pick)
5th
6th
7th

2022
1st
2nd
2nd (florida)
3rd
3rd (Toronto)
4th
5th
7th

On that basis I'm going to guess it's a 2022 3rd.

Yeah, I imagine it's a '21 or '22 3rd.

...would be nice if it was a 4th, but it's probably one of those 3rds.

In a vacuum it’s not an egregious move, but within the context of BTs entire body of work it definitely has all the colourings of expending draft capital for bottom 6 players when, in my opinion, these sorts of players should be coming up through your developmental system. We don’t have the good fortune of being able to develop these types of players because Trelivings propensity to trade away future prospect depth. It’s frustrating.

do either Thompson or Lewis play Center? Damn they are old, regardless of their position.

Interesting, Matt Calvert just retired today. Only 31 years old

90% of the league was better at hockey than Pitlick last year

Also he is completely useless on special teams

His play is also trending downward

5v5 he plays good defense and can face good competition

He’s been a good finisher in the past but was bad for whatever reason last year

Can you walk and chew gum at the same time?

I heard that idiot Treliving can do that.
