Saad signs 6 years 6.5M
Khaira signs 1 year 1M
Martinez signs 3 years 5.5M

Gaudreau - Lindholm - Tarasenko
Magnipane - Dvorak - Saad
Dube - Backlund - Thomas
Lucic - Khaira - Ritchie

Tanev - Hanifin
Anderson - Martinez
Stone - Valimaki
I must be missing something on Saad. That looks as bad as that Hyman contract.

Damn how we turn on our guys so quickly.

I wish we would stop trading Tkachuk, Gaudreau and Monahan for downgrades in all the proposals I’ve seen over and over again.

The grass isn’t always greener guys.
Might need to lower your expectations. The value might not be there but it’s more of a culture shift going into the 2021-2022 season.

Saad>Hyman but I don’t think he’s getting anything less than 6.5. I’m just guessing.

I pray for the miracle of a Landeskog signing. Hope Tre puts our Swedes to work selling the city to him. Not gonna happen, but one can dream.

So instead of having a team that loses because of a rotten culture, we can have a team that loses because of no talent? How is that going to help?

I'm wondering if it's time yet to re-quote what that blogger said about the Montreal Expos and how they wrecked themselves.

Just going off the names that have been mentioned available. If Tre is able to fleece teams I’m all for it. I just don’t have high expectations.

Fair enough. But a number of people around here seem to want to make bad trades just for the sake of change. I understand the emotion, but considered as a thought process, it's inexplicable. Like, ‘I only have a dollar and it's not enough to buy what I want, but if I trade it for three quarters that might help.’

ETA: If I'm running a team in this kind of mess, I'm saying to myself, ‘No matter how I arrange this roster, it's going to have holes and it's not going to be pretty. I can't afford to sell talent in order to buy intangibles. I'm going to hold off on making any trades that don't improve my total asset base. Once I've got enough good players to make a winning team out of, then I can worry about chemistry.’

Losing Gio isn’t going to shift the culture?

Already bringing Sutter in shifted the culture, no?

We don’t need to trade our best players to become a better team, we need to add to them so they aren’t the only ones who can be counted on and we have depth that can take some of the burden off.

Burying this team into the ground with ridiculous trades is not the answer here.

Build around the likes of Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Lindholm, Mangiapane, Dube, Hanifin, Andersson and Valimaki.

These guys are part of the solution, it drives me nuts seeing many here ready to throw some of them away, all in the name of “change.”

Yup. Trade those guys if some other GM wants a particular player badly enough to overpay; then you improve your talent base. Don't trade them just to get rid of them, or because the fans are tired of seeing them lose. The fans will be tired of losing no matter who does it.

Yes but you have to factor in the contract considerations. If Tkachuk and Gaudreau want to be here for the long-term on reasonable deals great - but that needs to be established VERY soon and if they don't - move them.

Again, not worth dealing in absolutes. You don't (I'm using a silly example to make the point) trade Gaudreau for a 7th-round pick and two rolls of stick tape just to eliminate the uncertainty about whether he re-signs. You certainly don't do it in the next few days just to get in ahead of his limited NTC.

If you do have to trade Gaudreau, history shows you can improve the return by shopping his expiring contract to contenders at the deadline. He's very unlikely to say, ‘Oh, I don't want to give up three or four whole months of my life playing for a team that has a good chance to win the Stanley Cup.’ The NTC is a non-factor at that point.

Are you familiar with the term ‘guddling’? It means catching fish out of a stream with your bare hands. People sometimes do it out of true desperation, if they're hungry enough and can't get their hands on a line or a fish hook. But it's a lot more effective to use a rod and reel and wait for the fish to bite, especially if you're in a hurry. It just requires patience, as scarce as that seems to be around here these days.

Some people think the Flames have a desperate need to get rid of Gaudreau before his NTC kicks in, and can't waste time waiting for a bite on the line. They want the team to guddle for a trade partner, no matter how bad the trade turns out to be. There's always a chance that the fish won't bite and you lose Gaudreau for nothing, but your expected return gets a lot worse if you just grab with both hands at a bad offer now.

I actually like Saad, but 6.5 for 6 years is insane. He also nowhere near as valuable as Hyman.

The athletic has A projected Saad contract at 4.7 for 3 or 4 years.

He is a RFA.

You’d have to think that Calgary would be at the bottom of his list.

What do you mean by “reasonable deals”?

FMV deals?

You might not consider them reasonable.

They will want to be paid, as it’s their best, and some cases, only chance to get paid.

To the extent they are willing to stay in Calgary, it will take an 8 year term. AAV in the 8+ range.

You may need to trade some when they are on expiring contracts and you can’t agree on a new one.

At that stage, it’s likely no one is overpaying.
