Paul Byron, Jacob Markstrom, Kristian Husselius

3 players who were on and cleared waivers in their early-mid 20’s and went on to have solid NHL careers into their 30’s. Kylington is not done yet

Or, I'm just overrating him and he actually sucks.
Like how they buried Bennett for years. Ingenious

"But he cleared waivers" is almost always a really lazy analysis which ignores the timing, the roster size at the time, the cap, etc.

Is there a place I can put down on prop bet on the over/under number of rage posts saying “see, Brad is a knob, we should have kept Gio” after Tanev makes his first mistake in October?

I really like Kylington as well. One thing I’ve most noticed is his speed. Such a graceful skater. If he ever gets caught up ice he is able to catch back up into the play with ease.
A player that one wouldn’t think to be a Sutter type, I too have a hunch he will become a big strong part of the defence corps starting this year.

Some of the recovery skates he did (in part to a couple of his own blunders on bad turnovers) closing off a quickstrike chance for the opposition last season were remarkable. You polish this kids game up and he is a gem.

What's the odds on this Gio to Rangers trade actually happening?

I wonder who the comparable in past Sutter teams would be: Lydman maybe? Leopold? No one I can think of on LA.

5v5 CF 54.7%
5v5 FF 51.1%
PDO 99.3

Don’t get me wrong, it’s nothing spectacular.

But it looks like the game is beginning to slow down for Kylington.

If it is, we have a player on our hands.

I don’t get the sense anybody expects multiple Norris trophies, but it isn’t unreasonable to believe Oliver can take a regular shift on an NHL blue line.

He’s right at that age when defensemen begin to figure it out, and our team sorta needs him to.
Hold the presses!! The Flames have a top RW

Buddy Robinson in 9 games... 12.5% more than Kylington

CF% 55.8
FF% 52.1
PDO 99.8

He is a UFA so the Flames better sign him before he the rest of the league gets their chance.

It would save the Flames 4-5 M on signing Hyman

Becoming less a fan of the rangers by the day. Not so much because they did anything to spite the Flames, but simply because they exist.

Gio and Fox should've been the present day top pairing.

This is actually interesting in a thread about Mark Giordano. The guy our current head coach once felt deserved a 3-way contract at roughly Kylington's age. The value of "unknowns" is so volatile - and both players similarily flashed talent.

Odds of Tanev not being injured and playing all the games 3 years in a row?

The reason this happened is because the free agent signing last summer that was pretty much universally panned turned out to be better than we all imagined.

I remember last offseason stating the best case scenario for Tanev was he played well enough to be selected by Seattle. I would have never in my wildest dreams thought Gio would be lost to Seattle because either he was going to be protected or he was going to regress to the point he wouldn’t be selected.
What? Obviously you didn't like it, and there were many others, but it far from universally panned. I would say it was more like 50/50, leaning on favourable.

Playing all the games is not useful. Playing none of the games is. See: Nikita Kucherov.

Fun fact: Gio has never played "all the games" 3 years in a row.

How many of the people whining that he wasn't traded were the same people claiming that he had negative value last year?

Good perspective.

Kylington is the same age Gio was when he went to Russia. He has also played almost twice as many NHL games as Gio had at the same age.

3 ways aren't all bad, depends on who is involved....
