He was a seller last deadline.

I do believe Treliving values his own players a little more than he should, which IMO is the one of the reasons we have seen only one "hockey trade" of significance during his tenure. He seems to be more comfortable dealing picks than from the roster. I think he was more comfortable dealing Hamilton since he had expressed his desire to leave.

Ofc I can't show the evidence. All I can say is I've heard this same stuff for years, my favorite one still being how he was "sipping his beer and felt good about going to batlle with this group" after failing to get anything done in the trade deadline. It's all bull####.

I've definitely heard how Treliving has been asking for a high price before only to see nothing come out of it. I know this tweet doesn't mention him but I'm not giving the benefit of the doubt anymore. You can do it if you want, I'm surprised anyone would after all these years.

Not sure how many are clamoring for the hockey deals this team made under Sutter or Feaster. I can’t really think of a good hockey trade Darryl made and all of his good moves were trading picks as well (Kipper, Cammalleri, Tanguay, Bourque). His hockey deals (Ference, Phaneuf,) are remembered as bad deals. Feaster made one decent hockey trade in Bourque for Cammy but his Regehr, Tanguay trades were brutal and his selling deals were bad.

Brad has done a nice job of selling players for picks and has the one nice pick deal for Dougie. His Carolina deal was a huge blockbuster that worked out for both sides but better for the flames long term. He hasn’t made a deal like that in 3 years so it is time to get going.

He traded a guy who asked for a trade. If he was a true seller Gio would likely have been gone. Ryan as well.

In any event, the underlying poin remains the same - there’s no evidence Treliving is orchestrating some sort of media driven persona.

It's a great point. Hockey trades are just way harder to get done these days (NMCs, NTCs, salary cap implications, trading to rivals/intra-division)

It’s true and I even think about back in the 09 draft Sutter essentially traded Tanguay for Cammalleri as he got a 1st from the Habs for Tanguay and spent a 1st to LA for Cammy.

I hate NTC/NMC it is out of control in the NHL and makes it that much harder for the markets like Calgary to build their team. Treliving had the hockey deal with the Leafs fall through in 2019 for Kadri but the NTC blocked that.

Does he flip Gaudreau and or Monahan for futures then go spend futures on Sam Reinhart or Christian Dvorak?

This summer is it for Brad for me. I am either all in on replacing him or he will win me back. I felt like in 2018 be made enough moves that it felt like a new refreshed team. I think we see 1-2 big moves in addition to losing Gio

He traded two guys. You asked when was the last time he was a seller, that’s all. I truly care very little of his public persona.

I’m not clamoring for any trades of the past, that’s for sure. Treliving has moved guys on expiring contracts but hasn’t often dealt players off the roster. Call it a hockey deal or whatever. Personally I wanted to see Monahan dealt for picks in last year’s draft.

Trades are harder, but I think there's a lot of truth to the theory that GMs just don't like making trades anymore, or seem scared to because it might backfire on them.

Another? The only star forward we have is Gaudreau, and he's a playmaking sniper who can deke you out of your socks. The only dimensions he's lacking are a direct result of his size (board play, checking, intimidating (he gets intimidated instead), etc.

A lot of GMs tend to make deals based on the value of their players rather than potential impact on the team. This is one area where analytics have let us down to some extent.

The leak from the Kraken taking Kerfoot in the draft is a good example. Kerfoot was put in a position to fail on the Leafs, due to the construction of that team. He was asked to be Boone Jenner, and he did the best that he could with it. His numbers suggest that he is middling, but put in the right situation, he likely has another gear.

I'm ok with "losing" a few trades if it makes the team better by creating a winning team construction. The best player out doesn't always indicate the winner of the trade. The best example in Calgary is the Brett Hull trade. Worth it.

The Calgary Flames have continued to take calls on Matthew Tkachuk, but multiple sources have told me the asking price is astronomical.

This is a good approach to see what the highest bidder is willing to offer.

I just feel that hockey trades are going more and more extinct means going scorched earth rebuild is the only way to build a team.

Rebuild to get your core and asset base, free agency and trading futures to round the team when the team is going all in.

That's why this year feels like a waste of time for me as a fan. The team is looking to retool, and build a contender via trades.

They should stop taking calls on Tkachuk and focus on trading the players who complained about him mixing it up too much. Too many spineless underachievers on this team.

Ya you could very well be right but I am not quite where you are. I am interested in seeing what they do in this next year and I could easily move toward the rebuild side of things.

I want to see a full season under Sutter with Markstrom and the changes that are certainly coming. I am really excited and pretty terrified about the moves that will be made over the next 2 weeks. I think we see a pretty big shakeup that most likely will lead toward an inevitable rebuild.

Didn’t Tkachuk quit on the team?

How people can stay enamoured with him after that is odd to me

No kidding. The team called him out for doing dumb stuff too often and it seems he pouted and quit. Add to that the fact that he did dumb stuff but then didn't back it, or his talk, up with elevated play and you have what we see now.

Exactly. I know most people loved the ward firing and hiring of sutter but for me it’s still very strange ward got hired as full time coach and got fired what 30 games into his first season as head coach? This happened imo because of Tkachuk situation. It’s clear he quit on the team. They needed a coach like sutter to whip guys into shape. Sutter gets hired and Tkachuks first few games was getting like 12 to 14 mins a game. I don’t think this was just a coincidence.

I don’t care how good you are if you quit on your team or want out you are tradeable

Flames trade Tkachuk for a good return if the use the cap wisely they could avoid a rebuild. If not Tkachuk probably wouldn’t stay here through a rebuild anyways
