This is sad. I hoped Gio would accomplish the rare feat of wearing the Flaming C his entire career.

I’ve never disliked Vegas. In fact, I love the saltiness when fans whine about them.

But Seattle taking Gio from us? #### those #######s and their crappy team. I hope they fold after 3 seasons. Also, the Sounders and Seahawks both suck too.

Well, many of us wanted a major shakeup. This accomplishes that and gives the gm a big chunk of change to try do something. Whether it works is for time to tell.

Under Sutter, Tanev was Gio's partner on the top pair. He can't replace Gio unless you clone him and run Tanev – Tanev.

Tanev is a right shot D and already on the roster playing top 4 minutes. They will more than likely need to bring in a veteran left shot top 4 D to replace Gio, unless they somehow think he can be replaced by one of Valimaki, Mackey or Kylington

We'll see how the D market shakes out if, as expected, Seattle stockpiles blueliners to flip to other teams. Might dampen the UFA market somewhat (at least for journeymen mid-talents).

The other one that I thought of could be a Tanev-Valimaki pairing.

I meant replace him as the #1 dman in the team and in a leadership role. Position wise yes, they will need to add a d man. I've got nothing but respect for Gio and what he brought to the Flames, but for the first half of last season Gios regression was one of the biggest talking points when it came to the Flames struggles.

Tanev and Hanifin was a revelation last year. The beginning of the season Markstrom was playing MVP hockey and that pairing had analytics that were out of this world. It's a testament to the veterans of this team that they had such a poor record when these guys were dominant.

I’m not 100%, just recall reading that somewhere recently in the context of the Vegas draft. I’ll have to see if I can find it again.
