Sadly that would be a win for the Oilers being able to dump that cap hit

It’s bad enough for 1 year but 2 is just priceless
They have cap issues next summer when nurse needs to be resigned

Yamamoto probably will get $3.5M, and I doubt Smith will take less than the $3.75M he got last year.
So even if you call it $7M that leaves the Oilers with $5M. And they want to re-sign Larsson too.
Really they have no money left to make a big addition without money going out.

Seriously. I looked at that. I suppose maybe Jones could have been picked, but if they wait on Larsson, they could have protected Jones. After that, Archibald? Kahun? Benson? The pickings are slim...

Yes, it's not that the Oilers made a trade to pay less money (no matter what the cap impacts are). Keith still makes more than Jones.
This is not like the Lucic / Neal deal, where the Flames organization saved a lot more money than simply the salary cap savings.

Anti-Oilers sentiment aside, this is one of the most lopsided trades I've seen in the NHL in a long time. Holland just got absolutely screwed LOL.

Yep, this isn't Flames fans ripping on the Oilers...this move is being universally laughed at

If I were the Oilers, I would let Larsson/Smith walk.
Use the $10M to add some other impact player. Ride with Koskinen/Stalock in net.
I think users here overplaying Oilers cap space issues. Next year they have a whopping $32M+ in cap space after you account for Keith with only Nurse/Starting Goalie to sign.

Yup, and they have to sign a couple depth forwards to even fill a roster, as signing Yamamoto still only brings them to 11, so that's another $2-3 million to get them to 13-14 forwards.
That still leaves them with Nurse - Bear - Russell - Keith as the top 4 D in the depth chart.

The fact that Holland is paying for Neal, Keith, Kassian, Koskinen and (still) Lucic is just awesome. This man is a national treasure and his spot in that organization should be preserved at all costs.

They have to sign Yamamoto, and a couple other forwards to get to 13-14 on the roster.
There's not enough money left for an impact player anywhere.

As it stands, the Oilers cap hit is $65.3M, plus potential performance bonuses of $1.75M, leaving them with a little less than $15.3M in cap space.
They have 10 forwards, 7 D, and a goalie under contract, looking like so:
RNH - McDavid - Pulju
XXX - Draisaitl - XXX
Shore - Turris - Kassian
Archibald - McLeod - Neal
Nurse - Bear
Keith - Bouchard
Broberg - Russell
Lagesson
XXX
Koskinen
They need a starting goalie, 2 top 6 wingers, and 2 more bodies to sign.
However, that includes the fact that there are NO NHLers in the bottom 6, and the top 4 on D include Nurse, Keith, Bear and Bouchard.
They don't need a couple wingers, they need 4 or 5 top 9 forwards, 3 more top 4 D, and a #1 goalie, in order to have a playoff team.
Good luck with that.
