Barrie signed for only 1 year in Edmonton for two reasons.

1. To prove he is worth a big contract the next year.
2. He could only stomach Edmonton for one year.

He may be a risk taker (by signing with Edmonton to begin with) but he is no dummy.

I'm surprised that dumpster fire up north even has the cap room to make this work with no salary retained.

Default Keith (no salary retained) to EDM for Caleb Jones + 3rd

I also really don’t expect much from Keith in terms of a resurgence. And that’s not just because he’ll be 38 years old. It’s because this whole move started so that Keith could live closer to his son. Not saying he won’t be a professional… I’m sure he’ll work hard and be in good shape for camp. But this feels like a guy making his retirement move without retiring… not a guy chasing his last shot at a cup.

So, that leaves the Oilers with about $12 million in cap space, needing to sign Yamamoto, a Starting Goalie, A 2,3 and 4 defenseman, and a couple of depth players?

I honestly can't tell if he's defending Katz or throwing him under the bus.

Or, you know, maybe just re-sign Barrie and save the assets.

Oilers pay top dollar for the ghost of Duncan Keith and the Senators hire Pierre McGuire.

Tidy bits of business for Canadian teams. Tidy bits of truly embarrassing, mind bottling business.

I actually think that Keith will have a bit of a resurgence, playing on the Oilers PP (because the Oil will give him EVERY opportunity possible, in order to justify the trade).

However, even saying that, Keith will do no more (and likely less) than Barrie did with the same opportunity. So no matter how you slice it, and how optimistic you want to be with Keith, it is a flat out LOSE of a trade.

Barrie was almost PPG...I will say for sure less, likely less than half even in the best case

With no salary retained, the trade really should have been Keith plus a 3rd to the Oilers for a 7th.

Doesn't matter who the GM is. The owner (and likely his beloved braintrust) continue to call the shots.

It will never change.

The only downside is that Keith is nasty with the stick - Johnny will need those slash proof gloves again.

Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger

No salary retained in Keith trade to Oilers. Jones and a 3rd back to Chicago.
If he waived it to be traded to Edmonton, is the NMC not voided?

Expansion draft isn't really relevant...who are the Oilers worried about losing anyway?

While Seattle won't do it, it would be hilarious for the Oilers to give up Jones and a third for someone who got claimed weeks later.

And we wonder why there hasn't been a Canadian Stanley Cup champion since 1993...
