This is why I want Gaudreau gone. We don't deserve him with fans like this. If you thought Savard lit it up after he left...

I got no problems with extending Johnny. He’s the best player this organization has had post Iginla and one of the best players to ever wear a Flames jersey. I just don’t see where the Flames will find a replacement for his skills. I’m fine with them trading him but the return has to involve a player with elite potential or there’s going to be a massive void in the lineup.

I feel like you don’t even watch the games.
Gaudreau has always been able to generate offensive opportunities even in the playoffs. The problem has been execution on those chances whether it be failed breakaway or penalty shot attempts (doing the stupid five-hole move too much) or whoever he sets up not burying it.
If there was nothing being generated I would agree with you but you could even see in this years regular season Gaudreau shooting more on breakaways and once he got put with Lindholm and Tkachuk there was chemistry and chances being generated every shift.
This narrative that Johnny disappears or is too small for the playoffs just isn’t true.
Like I said execution has been the issue but that can be remedied by changing linemates and practicing new breakaway moves.
I won’t argue with you about Monahan because he isn’t as dynamic as Gaudreau and can disappear when the going gets tough.

So what?
This team is so far away from competing that one massive void in the talent of the lineup hardly matters.

I’d reserve judgment on that until they play a full year with a real coach.

Really? Did you watch the SCF?
The Flames are so 'middle of the pack' its a joke. Sure, they probably could have held their own against most of the Canadian division, but they didnt.
I have zero confidence that this team, even with Gaudreau, would beat most of the other teams that made the playoffs.
We are so far away from competing its laughable.
If they want to win at any point in the near future they have to go through Vegas. I dont think this team could take Vegas in a series. Not a chance.
Treliving and some fans might believe that a season with Sutter is going to be different, but I dont see it. I think this team is on the down-swing and they already didnt make the playoffs in the easiest season to make the playoffs.
Our core is old and expiring rapidly. Its time to get some assets and try again.
And thats not an indictment, there are good players here, I just dont think we have the luxury of time anymore. If we want to make some use of Markstrom's prime then now is the time to build around him.
Too many darts have missed the board.

No chance beating Vegas yet Montreal walked them in 6. Ya, ok. The line between winning and losing is so fine. So fine a coach can make all the difference. Just ask the islanders about that.

Really? did you watch the Flames after we traded Savard? We were in an offensive pit hole for almost 5-6 years. Everyone would have sold their first born to Satan for a goal. and back then we still had Iggy.

Yeah, because Montreal had a cake-walk of a run-in and spent their entire season in the trenches getting the hell beat out of them by a Divisional pillow-fight that would make a teenage girl's sleepover party laugh in derision.
In conjunction with one of the best goaltenders of our time bailing them out over and over again. The only real downside was that Price ended up against a vastly superior team backstopped by Vasilevsky who is pretty damned good in his own right.
We couldnt even make it out of that pillowy-soft division, whats going to change when this team actually has to up against the real big hitters?
Ottawa. One of the worst teams in the League since the Oilers won a few lotteries rag-dolled the hell out of us. Regularly.
Sorry, I know my pessimism is rampant, but this team just isnt good enough. I dont know if they need a heart transplant or what, but I feel that we're staring at the end of this cycle.
And whats worse is that this cycle is just like all the others. Some good, some okay, all the same. Rinse and repeat.

Montreal making the finals was probably one of the worst things that could happen as it promotes the notion that all you need to do is make the playoffs and then anything can happen. Pretty much the game plan for the Flames since 2004.

We’ll have to agree to disagree then. I think this team needs some tweaks to its top 6 and a better top 4. I don’t think it needs to be burnt to the ground. If the right moves are made, with the coach we have in place, we’d have a shot.

With everything that happened the last year and a half, last season was a weird one and I think it's risky for GMs to make any decisions based on what played out last season. The previous seasons of the player before the pandemic need to be considered. The players will be first to admit they have it good compared to many others, but the seclusion they experienced impacted some players more than others.
I'm not saying Treliving should keep the roster the same though. I'm just hoping and thinking he will look beyond the performances of last year.

Couldnt agree more.
Its stupid.
And you want to know who originated that idea? Darryl Sutter.
And he proved it with LA. Squeaking in to the last seed and then winning. Maybe we should hire that guy?!? Oh wait....
But this team doesnt have that DNA, no matter how much they want to pretend that they do.
People need to realize that the last 2 seasons were so aberrant that you cant take the results seriously. Credit to Tampa, they recognized this and capitalized, but I'm expecting a return to the mean and we are simply not ready for it.

And thats fair enough.
I feel that this team has hit its ceiling. If you dont feel the same way then you are more than entitled to that opinion.
God...one of these days I hope I'm wrong. Trust me, that is Crow I'd happily eat.

Coaching does matter in this league. DeBoer couldn't figure out Montreal and how to beat price so the mighty Golden Knight's who are always touted as a powerhouse on these boards were eliminated.
The Islanders lost their star centre and went from one of the worst defensive teams in the league to one of the top without any top 3 superstars. What changed? Coaching.
I'm happy we have Sutter and excited to see how this team responds in a full season. I'm also hoping we see some changes made to the team so it's not like I'm happy with the status quo.
I have been a life long flames fan and if I found myself as bitter and negative about it as many on here come off I would take a step back for sure. It must be exhausting.

Suffering is my Mead. Its the Elixir of the Gods.
If your entire existence consists of constant suffering then its really not a hardship, its just everyday life.
Its the people who dont understand that who think of it as a burden.
