Which is... astounding. But I guess that's what happened.
I think this is exactly what happened.
As strange as it all was.

You ever find yourself in a fast conversation with a group of people, and in keeping up with the witty banter you try an off the cuff joke that falls flat and you hope no one really heard it because it makes no sense and isn’t funny? Isn’t that what this is?

Not quite as often as I find myself making an offensive joke that maybe pushes things too far (and gets CP mods mad!). South Park can get away with it, sometimes you think you can too. Lapse in judgement happen but I don’t think I buy the “I mean tested positive for rum” but also if he was lying why not say he meant tested positive for drugs lol.

Man the supposed joke he’s implying is “testing positive for alcohol” “or blowing over” or simply being “under the influence”

At no point is he implying the line “testing positive for rum”. It’s an inaccurate portrayal and doesn’t help make sense of things. Scorpion was also laughing at the ludicrousness of that line, but he didn’t actually say it, or even imply it!

The analysis of this whole thing has been absurd and shameful IMO.

The guy is just a tongue tied idiot, not a bigot. Last I checked, that makes him human.

Maybe this is an age thing. I grew up when making gay jokes was the norm. Making AID jokes was the norm. It's great that is no longer the case, but every locker room insult was about being gay. I'm not defending it, it's just simply a fact.

I saw the clip and didn't dawn on me that he could have been doing anything but making an AIDs joke. I didn't need someone to connect the dots. This was something that if said 30 years ago (not on TV at least) there wouldn't be a debate about what he meant in my opinion, it also wouldn't have mattered.

So in one way, awesome that we need some convoluted "testing positive for rum" excuse because we've progressed to the point that making a gay joke like this is career jeopardizing. And even better that people can't seem to fathom that someone would make an AIDs/gay joke so they believe his excuse. I think that speaks highly of them and society's progress. But I'll never be convinced lol.

I agree that overall it was a very very strange situation indeed. I didn't see anything in particular that needed any of the outrage that happened, and even if it did, aren't we all human and make mistakes ? I don't think he should have lost his job over it and I don't think Don Cherry should have either, if he had apologized and given time to make that decision.

The entire situation is very classic 2021 in that apparently you make a booze related joke, people take offence as they think you are making an AIDS /HIV joke, the people in the broadcast room are in on the joke, twitter goes crazy over said joke.

All is made well by "reaching out to guiding lights in the equity arena and the allies in the LGBTQ community"

We are almost getting to the point in society where I think people just want to be lied to and are actively craving it to calm down.

In the Don Cherry situation, if he would have hypothetically issued a statement such as " I apologize to all who may have been offended, I have reached out to members of the Canadian Legion fund who support all Canadians wearing the poppy. Canadian's and new immigrants, including Russian hockey players of all backgrounds, races, faiths and sexual orientation matter and make our country and our game #1"

Thumbs up! Perhaps that statement would have allowed him to keep his job and let people just be calm.

So Ron is a drunk frat guy at parties? Looks like the other people in that photo have their clothes on and are socializing like normal.

I didn't read Ron's biography but did read his other book, Hometown hockey I believe it was called, boring. But I also think the whole hometown hockey thing has run it's course, everybody pretty much grew up playing hockey anytown across Canada!

Has Ron never heard Big League by Tom Cochrane?

I like to imagine that the context of that photo is that Ron just wandered into a high-end restaurant off the street, already bare-chested and working on his beer and that everyone in the restaurant immediately knew who he was and were just awkwardly trying to ignore him all while he is (poorly) rocking out to The Tragically Hip on Air Guitar.

BOBCAYGEON!!!!

The best part is that he's clearly standing on a chair or the bar, since the guy next to him is messing with a ceiling light.

Ron's givn'r

Jesus....

I mean, I suppose if I was Don Cherry's Babysitter for 20 odd years I'd probably have developed unhealthy stress outlets too.

I've seen that picture many times and I still don't understand a grown up man taking off his shirt at what appears to be a formal gathering. Was this maybe taken at a swingers convention?
